Mr Jignesh,

what is the difference between MCCB,ACB and VCB..

I heard that above 630A we should use ACB ,but MCCB’s are available till 1600A.

So can you tell me from which rating we have to go for ACB and VCB

Is there any difference in the operation of MCCB and ACB.

Thanking you,

Dear Jignesh,

Your cable selection table is very helpful. But i’ve a question to clarify? how do we determine the cable
current capacity of cables running in parallel? for example if my breaker is rated at 1000A, what size of
cable conductor should be terminating at the terminals per phase, can i terminate 2 x 1c x 400 per
phase or how do we decide the conductor sizing? as i understand there is a derating factor of cables
when connected in parallel? may be you can ellaborate further and may be send me details on the cable
sizing formulation and other useful data on my email : manjarwalla@gmail.com

 Reply

Jignesh.Parmar on November 1, 2012 at 5:03 pm

Use Equation
% Voltage Drop:=(1.732 X (Full Load Current)X(RCosØ+j SinØ)XLengthX100) / Line Voltage X No of
Run X 1000.
Here No of Run cable is Either 1,2 or more in parallel.
You can also use “Cable Design” sheet of the Excel Tool Page of this Blog

Dear Jignesh,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I’ve also gone through your cable design excel
sheet, wonderful program. On the cable design program how do you determine the starting
and running cos and sin thetha? do you have any thumb rule for calculating the cable runs
in a faster way? for example if my full load current is 1000A as incomer or any feeder load
connected to my panel. As from the program i’ve to input the the respective KW to attain
nearest full load current before i can get the runs of cables?

Jignesh.Parmar on November 3, 2012 at 5:03 pm

this Rating is as per Standard Cable Catalog and IS. Cable Rating never indicate derating factor.
Because Derating Factor depends upon Your Application.
It is depend upon Type of Laying Cable –
=In Air,Land, at 0.500mt depth at 1 meter depth,
=Air-Land Temperature,
=in bundle,=In separate,Distance between two Cable, etc.
If Cable Rating is 100 Amp It may be 80 Amp or 90 Amp or 100 Amp depend upon Laying of cable.

will not be double of 370. it will less than double. how it will calculate ???

with regards
By Anil

Jignesh.Parmar on November 16, 2013 at 5:10 pm

You are mixing two different topic ..

(1) If we laid cable in ground, air or trench it’s current capacity will be decrease due to
surrounding temp.
(2) If we laid cable in group / single it’s current capacity will be decrease those effect called
“derating factor of cable..
You find in Electrical Tool page.
If we run two cable for same phase obviously it’s capacity would be double…
