GUNNEDAH SOLAR PROJECT - UNDERGROUND CABLE AMPACITY REPORT

Executive Summary
September 25, 2020

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1.1 OBJECTIVES
This report is provided by Stantec Consulting Ltd. (Stantec) to demonstrate that all Gunnedah Solar
Project underground cable trenches are designed to meet or exceed applicable ampacity
requirements based on site specific conditions in the highest loading and heating scenarios.

This report is divided into two main sections. The first section covers DC collector cable sizing and
ampacity calculations from the PV modules to the MV Station Inverters. The DC collector system is
comprised of the following installations:
1. PV Sub-Array Cable bundled on racking and in direct buried conduit from PV modules to
combiner boxes;

2. PV String Cable in underground direct buried trenches from Combiner boxes to Inverters.

The second section covers underground medium voltage AC feeder cable sizing from the MV Station
transformers to the substation switchgear. It also includes the underground medium voltage AC
incomer cable sizing from the substation switchgear to transformer. The AC collector system is
comprised of the following installations:

1. AC Feeder circuits direct buried underground cable between MV stations and from MV
stations to the switchgear. This report analyzes the highest heating scenario of direct buried
installation.

2. AC Incomer circuits direct buried underground cable in conduit between switchgear to

transformer. This report analyzes the highest heating scenario of direct buried installation.

1.2 MODEL INPUTS

This report takes site specific environmental factors into consideration. Geotechnical and thermal
resistivity reports completed on site are used for the interpretation of soil thermal resistivity and
moisture content. See Section 1.4 for reference details.

Based on geotechnical reports and field test pits, it was found the majority of the site had silty clay soil
classifications. The geotechnical report also noted that there was approximately 170mm of rain in the
previous three weeks, otherwise the region had generally experienced ongoing drought conditions.
Taken from the Government of Australia’s website, it was also found that the Gunnedah site lies in an
above average relative soil moisture percentile.

A native soil resistivity value of 1.60°C•m/W at 2% moisture content is used in modelling based on site
specific dry-out curves (see Appendix B). Due to inconsistency in the soil and adding additional
conservatism, the native backfills in the trench surrounding the conductors have been assumed to dry
out under a worst-case scenario. The native soil backfill selected has a resistivity value of
1.90°C•m/W at 0% moisture content.

A cable load factor was also considered. The longest day of the year was found to be approximately
14 hours and 10 minutes. The provided “Typical Meteorological Year (P50)- Hourly Values of Solar

It is assumed that the cables will be under full load when 1000 Wh/m² of irradiation is present. It is
shown that from only 10:30am until 2:30pm, the cables will be under full load. At approximately
8:30pm until 4:30am, there is 0 Wh/m² of irradiation present. Given these variables, and a
conservative approach, the load factor was calculated by applying 100% loading for all daylight hours
and 0% for night. These calculations provided a load factor of 0.67. A load factor of 0.7 was
simulated in the models

PV Output Circuit and AC Collector are analyzed using the IEC 60287 and 60853 calculation method
based on Neher-McGrath equations and completed using CYMCAP 7.2 Rev.1 modeling software.

1.3 RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The results presented in Section 2.0 and Section 3.0 are presented to confirm that cable ampacities
are acceptable based on different trench configurations and site-specific conditions. Steady-state
models are run to ensure the ampacity of all cables in specific highest loading trench configurations
meet applicable cable and code requirements.

Dear Sirs

Gunnedah Solar Farm - Thermal Resistivity Sampling

Orange Grove Road

Orange Grove Gunnedah NSW 2380

1. Introduction

This letter report presents the results of undisturbed push-tube sampling carried out at the above site.
The work was undertaken at the request of PCL Constructors Canada Inc., to provide subsurface soil
thermal resistivity data at cable burial depth to assist in the design of buried power transmission
cables and trench backfill between the solar arrays and the substation.

The samples were taken at ten locations on 3 March 2020 by an engineering geologist from Douglas
Partners Pty Ltd (DP) in accordance with our Proposal SYD200032. Test pits were excavated to
maximum expected cable burial depth and push-tube samples were taken at the expected cable burial
depth. The tubes were sealed to maintain insitu moisture content and a geotechnical test-pit log was
recorded. Samples were sent for laboratory analysis to produce Thermal Resistivity dry-out curves in
accordance with ASTM D5334 Standard Test Method for Determination of Thermal Conductivity of
Soil and Soft Rock by Thermal Needle Probe Procedure.

2. Site Description and Fieldwork

The surface soils consisted of dry sandy and silty soils, covering flat plains within wheat and cotton
fields (The Manilla 1:250k Geological Sheet SH56-09, first edition 1973 indicated the area comprised
Quaternary stream alluvial deposits, including riverine plain deposits, comprising sandy to silty soils
and minor gravelly soils).

Subsurface soil moisture was recorded in the upper silty clay layer in all 10 Test Pits. All of the U75
push-tube samples were taken from the sidewall of this layer, refer Table 1. Below. Rainfall during the
previous months, December to March, is attached (cf. the Bureau Of Meteorology). Gunnedah airport,
~9 km from site, recorded 170 mm during the previous 3 weeks, otherwise the region has generally

experienced ongoing drought conditions in recent years. The site is on the Gunnedah Plains with
negligible topographic variation (i.e. essentially flat), and is largely an irrigated cotton farm, with some
adjoining wheat fields, so the subsurface will be receiving some moisture due to seepage from the
irrigation channels and the flooded plantation fields.

Test Pits were excavated using a 30 t excavator with 1.2 m wide toothed bucket. Pits were excavated
to ~1.5 m depth, essentially in the upper silty clay layer; the 75 mm diameter, 450 mm long steel
sample tubes were hammered into the sidewall at 0.8 - 1.0 m depth, enough to be held in place before
being pushed in with the bucket. Bulk samples of ~5 kg were also taken where gravel inclusions may
have restricted the filling of the tube. Tubes were sealed with a tight-fitting plastic cap and securely
taped for moisture retention.

3. Results

Dry-out curve results from testing by the NATA Accredited laboratory - Geotherm Australasia, are
provided for your assessment. The oven-drying process took up to 4 weeks for all samples to fully
dry. Samples were tested at approximately weekly intervals to acquire five thermal resistivity readings
for each sample.

4. Limitations

Douglas Partners (DP) has prepared this report for this project at Gunnedah NSW in accordance with
DP’s proposal SYD200032 dated 26 January 2020 and acceptance received from
PCL Constructors Canada Inc.. This report is provided for the exclusive use of PCL Constructors
Canada Inc for the specific project and purpose as described in the report. It should not be used by or
be relied upon for other projects or purposes on the same or another site or by a third party. DP has
necessarily relied upon information provided by the client and / or their agents.

The results provided in the report are considered to be indicative of the sub-surface conditions on the
site only to the depths investigated at the specific sampling and / or testing locations, and only at the
time the work was carried out. Sub-surface conditions can change abruptly due to variable geological
processes and also as a result of human influences. Such changes may occur after DP’s field testing
has been completed.

DP’s results are based upon the conditions encountered during this investigation. The accuracy of the
results provided by DP in this report may be affected by undetected variations in ground conditions
across the site between and beyond the sampling and / or testing locations.

This report must be read in conjunction with all the attachments and should be kept in its entirety
without separation of individual pages or sections. DP cannot be held responsible for interpretations
or conclusions made by others unless they are supported by an expressed statement, interpretation,
outcome or conclusion stated in this report.
