ASSIGNMENT

1. A = {a, b, c, d, e} is a set of five integers. We take two out of the numbers in A and add. The
following ten sums are obtained
0, 6, 11, 12, 17, 20, 23, 26, 32, 37.
Find the five integers in the set A.

2. For an integer n, a student states the following:

I. If n is odd, (n + 1)2 is even
II. If n is even, (n - 1)2 is odd
III. If n is even, ( n − 1) is irrational.
Which of the above would be true?
A. I & III B. I & II C. All D. II & III

3. Choosing any two even numbers, can you write all natural numbers using addition and subtraction?
If not which numbers can not be written?

4. Can you write all numbers using 6 and 9? Why? Which numbers can be written? What is the smallest
natural number that could be written? What relation does this smallest number have with 6 and 9?

5. Repeat the above question for 25 and 15? What is the smallest number that could be written? What
relation does this smallest number have with 25 and 15?

Solutions
1. We may assume that a < b < c < d < e. The smallest sum of the ten sums should be a + b; and the
second smallest sum must be a + c. Again the largest sum must be d + e; and the sedond largest sum
must be c + e. Also the sum of all the ten sums must be 4(a + b + c + d + e). These observation imply
a+b=0 (5)
a+c=6 (6)
c + e = 32 (7)
d + e = 37 (8)
1
a+b+c+d+e= (184) = 46 (9)
4
Now (9) – ((5) + (8)) gives c = 9. From the value of c the other elements of A are obtained
immediately. Thus
A = {-3, 3, 9, 14, 23}.

2. Answer (b)

3. Sum or difference of any two even nos. will be an even number. Hence, will will never be able to
create any odd numbers .

4. The sum or difference of any numbers formed using 6 and 9 will be of the form 6k1 + 9k2 (k1, k2 being
integers). We can take 3 common from 6 and 9 and hence, the no. is of the form 3k. Therefore, any number
formed will be a multiple of 3.
Minimum number which can be formed will be 3 which can be formed by 9-6.
HCF(6,9) = 3
3

5. The sum or difference of any numbers formed using 15 and 25 will be of the form 25k1 + 15k2 (k1, k2 being
integers). We can take 5 common from 15 and 25 and hence, the no. is of the form 5k. Therefore, any
number formed will be a multiple of 5.
Minimum number which can be formed will be 5 which can be formed by
5 = (25 X 2) - (15 X 3).
HCF(15,25) = 5
