Problem Solving: Show your complete solution and box your final answer. Incomplete solution will not be given merit.

1. A reinforced concrete tied column carries a dead axial load of 800 kN and a live axial load of 1500 kN. Use concrete strength
f’c = 27.6 MPa and yield strength of reinforcement fy = 315 MPa. Compute the following
a. (10 points) Design axial load that the column will carry in kN.
b. (10 points) If the dimension of column is 380 mm x 450mm, what will be the required number of 20mm diameter
bars?
c. (10 points) If the dimension of column is 350 mm x 500mm, what will be the required number of 16mm diameter
bars?
2. A 320 mm x 550 mm rectangular is carrying a total load of 90 kN/m all over the span of 5m. The beam is unrestrained. The
concrete to be used has strength of 27.6 MPa. The main reinforcement has yield strength of 415 MPa. Use steel cover of
70mm. Using USD:
a. (10 points) Determine the design moment that the beam will carry in kN-m at the midspan. M max = WL2/8
b. (10 points) Determine the required steel area in mm2.
c. (10 points) Determine the number of 16 mm diameter bars. (Round down your answer)
3. Design the slabs BCFG, FGJK, and JKNO. Assume beam dimension to be 300 x 450mm. Use fy = 280 MPa and f’c = 21
MPa. Diameter of bars is 10mm. Use all Wu = 60 kN/m.

Design Required:
Spacing to be used in mm (20 points)
Number of 12mm diameter rebar to be used (Use your final As for computing the number or rebars) (20 points)
