SMART SHOPPING TROLLY WITH AUTOMATED BILLING SYSTEM

Abstract:

The Smart Shopping Trolley with Automated Billing System project redefines the shopping
experience through QR code technology. Equipped with sensors, the trolley scans QR codes on products as
they are placed inside, updating the system in real-time. Customers interact with a user-friendly touchscreen
interface to view scanned items and prices. At checkout, automated billing calculates the total based on
scanned QR codes, providing efficient payment options. This innovation streamlines checkout processes,
minimizes waiting times, and optimizes inventory management for retailers. The project represents a
significant leap inretail technology, promising a seamless shopping journey powered by QR code integration.

I. Introduction:

The Smart Shopping Trolley with Automated Billing System project represents a pioneering endeavor
in therealm of retail, leveraging QR code technology to revolutionize the traditional shopping experience. In
an eracharacterized by rapid technological advancement and shifting consumer expectations, this project
respondsto the need for streamlined processes and enhanced convenience in the retail sector. By assigning
unique QRcodes to each product, customers can seamlessly scan items using their smartphones or integrated
trolley scanners, updating their digital carts in real-time. A user-friendly touchscreen interface complements
this technology, providing shoppers with instant access to product details and pricing, thereby enriching their
shopping journey. At checkout, the automated billing system compiles scanned items, facilitating swift and
hassle-free transactions. Beyond consumer benefits, the integration of QR code technology holds
transformative potential for retailers, promising improved inventory management and operational efficiency.

II. Literature Survey:

In this article some of the literature survey has been executed to gain the correct details about the
existing methodologies which has been detailed below.

In the paper [1] “Smart Shopping Trolley using QR Code and ESP32Cam” model is implemented by
R.Ranjith and Soumyalatha Naveen from REVA University, School of Computer Science and Engineering,
Bengaluru, India in June 2022. They proposed system is to save the time consumption very reliable, low cost
365 and easily manageable that are implemented with latest technologies. This model can be mounted on all
shopping trolley.

In paper [2] “Intelligent Shopping Cart with Automatic Product Detection and Secure Payment System”
developed by Ponnalagu and Sudipta Ranjan Subudhi in April 2019 integrates Arduino UNO, RFID reader,
fingerprint sensor, keypad, LCD screen, and GSM/GPRS module. It facilitates product scanning via RFID
and keypad input, followed by UID and fingerprint verification for payment. However, its complex process
may deter some customers, especially during the pandemic due to hygiene concerns with the fingerprint
sensor. Additionally, requiring a SIM card for each GSM module adds to cost and maintenance.
Simplification of the user interface, exploring touchless payment options, and considering alternative
communication technologies could enhance its usability and accessibility.

In paper [3] Mehul Nallamothu, Meghana Galipelli, Navyatha Jangam, and Madhu Bala Myneni developed
a project in 2023 titled "Smart Shopping Trolley with Automated Billing using Arduino." This project
introduces an automated customer billing system in shopping malls, utilizing a shopping cart equipped with
an LCD screen to display the total number of products purchased. Access to goods is granted via RFID cards,
aiming to accelerate the checkout process and provide customers with more time. Additionally, the LCD
screen displays specific product details such as name and price.

In paper [4] Sapana, Swapnali, Mohammad, A. D. Sonawane 2021 from Department of Electronics and
Telecommunication Engineering, JSPM’S Rajarshi Shahu College of Engineering, Pune are doing Shopping
Trolley with “Automated Billing Using Arduino”. This project is cost effective and friendly for the customers
to avoid the billing by standing in the long queues for a longer time. It can made customers can themselves
scan the products without any help of manual billing. The total price of the products is displayed accordingly.
It has consisted of RFID, Arduino Nano, Node MCU esp8266, GSM module and LCD screen.

In paper [5] Shishir. R. Patil, Shridhar N. Mathad, S. S. Gandhad, M.C. Ellemmi 2022 has done the project
on Smart Trolley with “Automatic Billing System using Arduino” and published the paper on 2022. They
have implemented successfully a feasible technology based on RFID to help customers in abundance and
saves precious time especially in billing which is highly tedious task waiting for our turn. Though RFID can
scan huge items at once but every item should be tagged. Trolley turns to be smart with inbuilt features of
tags and readers not consuming much space and thus make its very attractive for customers.

In paper [6] “IoT-based smart shopping cart system” has implemented by using the RFID technology. They
system will utilize various sensors and devices, such as RFID readers, weight sensors, and barcode scanners,
to automatically detect and track the items placed in the cart. When a customer scans any item its code will
be detected automatically, the item weight, cost and name will be displayed on the LCD screen. It was
proposed by Anusha K, Gayana G P, Rekha B Honnali, Sahana G B, Shridevi H in 2023.

In paper [7] James Agajo, Ajao A. Lukmam, Sadiq Thomas, Najashi Gafai, Ishaya R. Namah from Nigerian
Journal of Engineering Science Research (NIJESR), Abdusalami Abubakar College of Engineering,
Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, Nigeria, has been implemented the project on Development of an
Improve “Automated Shopping Trolley Payment System” Using a Barcode Scanner and Weight Sensor in
December, 2021. This research developed a system placed on the shopping trolley, which is to complete the

billing process in the trolley rather than waiting in long queues. To achieve this with a barcode scanner,
weight sensor and LCD screen.

In paper [8] Subhransu Sekhar Panda, Jharana Behera 2022 Journal of Engineering Science (JES) Gandhi
Institute for Technology, Bhubaneswar, India. This innovative project idea can be used is places like shopping
complexes, supermarkets & malls to purchase the products. RFID card is used to securely access every
product in shopping places. RFID tag/card is used for accessing the products. hence this project will help in
improving the security & also the shopping time can be reduced. It also provides an enjoyable & user-friendly
shopping experience to the customers.

In paper [9] Paripally Pallavi, Bodla Raviteja, Anna Varun, R. Narender 2022 has done the project on “Smart
shopping cart” it was implemented by using the ESP32-cam, Arduino uno. Green, red and blue leds, a 128x64
graphic lcd display is connected to Arduino uno. An application is used to display bill details and payment
through application.

III. Design and Methodology

In System Design, Initially, the requirements for the smart shopping trolley system were identified
based on the challenges faced by customers during peak shopping periods. These requirements included real-
time product identification, automated billing, user-friendly interface, and low-cost implementation.

The components for the system were carefully selected to meet the identified requirements.
This included choosing suitable microcontrollers, sensors, communication modules, and display units.
Factors such as cost-effectiveness, availability, and compatibility were taken into consideration during the
selection process. The hardware components, including microcontrollers, sensors, and displays, were
integrated to form the physical system. Simultaneously, software development involved programming the
microcontrollers to control sensor inputs, process data, and interact with users through the display unit. QR
code technology was employed for product identification. Each product was assigned a unique QR code
containing relevant information such as product name, price, and barcode. QR code scanners were integrated
into the trolley to facilitate the scanning process. The ESP32Cam module was utilized for its capabilities in
image processing and wireless communication. It was integrated into the system to capture and process QR
code images, extract product information, and communicate with the central billing system.

A local webpage was developed to provide users with a graphical interface for monitoring their shopping
progress and making payments. The webpage was designed to display scanned products, calculate the total
bill, and facilitate online payments through secure channels.

Testing and Evaluation of the system underwent rigorous testing to ensure that all components
functioned as intended. This included testing the QR code scanning functionality, communication between
hardware components, and accuracy of billing calculations. A user study was conducted to evaluate the
usability and effectiveness of the smart shopping trolley system. Participants were asked to simulate shopping
scenarios using the prototype system, and their feedback was collected to identify areas for improvement.

The performance of the system was evaluated in terms of speed, accuracy, and reliability. Metrics such as
scanning speed, billing accuracy, and system responsiveness were measured and compared against
predefined benchmarks. The prototype system was deployed in real-world settings, such as supermarkets or
shopping malls, to assess its performance under actual usage conditions. Feedback from users and operators
was collected to further refine the system design and functionality.

IV. Result:

In this project Customers register an account on the mobile app, providing basic information such as
name, contact details, and payment preferences. Using the mobile app, IP address, customers scan the QR
codes on selected products to add them to their virtual shopping cart. The smart shopping trolley detects the
added items and updates the display screen with real-time information, including item details and running
total. Customers can view their current bill amount on the trolley's display screen at any time during the
shopping process. Once customers have completed their shopping, they proceed to the checkout counter. The
mobile app generates a unique QR code representing the customer's shopping cart contents and total bill
amount.

V. Conclusion:

The implementation of a smart shopping trolley with automated billing system using QR code
technology represents a significant advancement in retail automation and customer service. By leveraging IoT
and mobiletechnology, this innovative solution offers a seamless and convenient shopping experience while
improvingoperational efficiency for retailers. As technology continues to evolve, such systems are poised to
become anintegral part of the future retail landscape. Hence, it reduces the risk of billing errors and ensures
accurate transaction records. Streamlines the shopping process, leading to shorter queues and improved
customer satisfaction.
