Figure 1: Making of yarn from linseed flax fibres

Since last few decades, with growing environmental awareness among the consumers the
demand of vegetal fibre has been increasing in the consumer industry. To meet this growing
vegetal fibre demand, researchers have proposed the extraction of vegetal fibre from
different alternative plant sources (Pillin et al., 2011). Linseed flax is one of such plant which
is rich in fibres. Researches have reported that linseed flax can be a potential candidate for
bio-composite reinforcement and other textile applications (Bar et al. 2022). In spite of having
huge potential, the linseed flax fibres didn’t find any commercial application yet. It is mainly
due to the challenges involved in fibre extraction from linseed stems and in the conversion
linseed fibres into the yarn.
In this present study, a new method of fibre extraction from linseed stems has been
discussed. Then different characteristics of the extracted linseed fibres for instance, tensile
strength, fibre maturity, fibre length and diameter etc., have been studied. Finally, the
conversion of the extracted linseed fibres into suitable yarn and the potential of these yarns
in home textile, geotextile and as bio-composite reinforcement has been discussed.
