I will talk to you about a little animal in danger of extinction, the Andean
Condor.

What is the importance of the Andean condor for the ecosystem?

The Andean condor feeds on carrion, which is why it plays an invaluable role in
ecosystems. By consuming dead animals you prevent the proliferation of bacteria
that can cause diseases in humans. In addition, it helps control the population of
other scavenger species and thus contributes to maintaining the balance of the
ecosystem.

Because it is in danger of extinction?

This large bird is currently among the threatened species. In fact, it has been on
the list of Endangered Species since 1970. This is due to several reasons,
including some natural and others due to the hand of man.
As a summary, the main causes of the danger of extinction of the condor are:
▪ Low reproduction rate.
▪ Food poisoned by conflicts in livestock farming.
▪ Hunters.
▪ Habitat destruction.

How to preserve the Andean Condor?
The main strategies established by the Action Plan for the
Conservation of the Andean Condor in Peru are the following:
1. Research and monitoring.
2. Management and restoration of their habitat.
3. Awareness, communication, dissemination, training and participation of
the local population in environmental education processes.
4. Gestión y fortalecimiento institucional.
