1.4 Controller Functions And Features

 Detects the voltages and frequencies of two AC input sources, alarming when power source failures occur such
as overvoltage, under-voltage, over-frequency and under-frequency.
 Multiple operating modes: Automatic (Source I Priority, No Source Priority), Remote Control, and Manual.
 Center-off position delay and Center-off position protection.
 Center-off position delay: When the transfer switch transfers the load from one source to another source, the
transfer switch can stay in center-off position for a period of time. This center-off position delay time can be set
by the user, depending on the load characteristics. The default setting is 0 seconds, but can be set to 5 seconds,
in order to consume the load inertia and protect loads such as motors from getting damaged by the inrush
current when the load transfers from one source to another source.

3.3 Generator Control

The controller can control a generator through the “GEN” port. In Source I Priority mode, when the controller loses
power or Source I (Priority source) has some abnormality, the controller sends a generator start signal. When priority
source availability returns, a time delay keeps the generator running for 2 minutes (cool-down period), then sends a
generator stop signal. Note: If the controller loses power for any reason, the “NC and COM” contact of “GEN” will
close, sending a generator start signal. Once the controller restarts, a generator stop signal will be sent after a 2
minute cool-down time delay, if the normal source is available.

3.4 Manual Operation

The transfer switch manual operation procedures are as follows:
1. Slide the AUTO/MANUAL cover left, to ‘MANUAL’ position, as shown in Figure 3-3.

Chapter 4 Maintenance And Troubleshooting 21

Chapter 4 Maintenance And Troubleshooting

This chapter describes the transfer switch installation, commissioning and common faults and maintenance methods.

4.1 Start Up / Function Test

4.1.1 Manual Operation Test

Both power supply sources must be disconnected before manual testing can begin. Refer to Chapter 3.4 to operate
the switch in Manual mode. Using the handle, manually operate the transfer switch from Source I position to Source II
position, and then return the switch to the Source I position. The switch operation should be smooth, and without
interruption.

4.1.2 Verify Voltage Detection

First make sure the rated voltage of the transfer switch on the nameplate is the same as the rated voltages of both
power supply sources. Connect Source I live power supply source to the transfer switch. Source I Indication LED will
be on (green). Then disconnect Source I by opening the upstream circuit breaker, and repeat with Source II; the
Source II Indication LED will be on (green). This ensures that the source wiring is correct.

Figure 4-1 LED Light Indication

! DANGER
When measuring voltage of power sources to ensure it matches the switch nameplate rating, do not touch the terminals or copper bars of the
transfer switch, otherwise it could result in death, or serious injury.

4.1.3 Automatic Operation Test

This is used to test the ATS in automatic operation mode and operate the transfer switch automatically.
1) Connect Source I live power supply source to the transfer switch by close the upstream circuit breaker. The
Transfer Switch should transfer to Sources I position. Then disconnect Source I by opening the upstream circuit
breaker.
2) Connect Source II live power supply source to the transfer switch by close the upstream circuit breaker. The
Transfer Switch should transfer to Sources II position. Then disconnect Source II by opening the upstream circuit
breaker.

Appendix 1 Surge Protection Device 23

Appendix 1 Surge Protection Device

1. The Series 230 Automatic Transfer Switch must be protected against frequent voltage surges or power anomalies
by installing an upstream Surge Protection Device (SPD) before connecting to a live Source I and Source II. It is
recommended that the SPD wire connections use the V-shaped wiring method shown in Appended Figure 1. When
limited by practical conditions, if it is difficult to adopt V-shaped wiring, the direct-parallel-connection method shown in
Appended Figure 2 may also be used. It is very important that the connection wire should be as short as possible
(less than 0.5m) when using direct-parallel-connection method to achieve better protective performance.
2. The connection wires should be multi-core copper wire with a cross-sectional area greater than 10mm2 (AWG6).
3. Appropriate MCB or Fuse should be serial-connected to the front-end of the SPD for AC power supply. The MCB
should have the “C” tripping characteristic.
4. The Source power supplies should be disconnected when installing SPD’s. Live installation is prohibited.
5. While an SPD may not need special maintenance, it is recommended that one periodically checks whether the
indicators of the SPD are functioning normally and that the SPD is operating in accordance with the manufacturer’s
requirements.
6. The Wiring method shown in Appended Figure 3 is forbidden. If a previously installed SPD is wired similar to
Appended Figure 3, the wiring needs to be modified to Appended Figure 1 or Appended Figure 2.
