What’s New

What is Contact Sports?

Page |2
Contact sports are sports that emphasize or require physical contact between
players. Some sports, such as mixed martial arts, are scored on impacting an
opponent, while others, including Rugby football, American football and Australian
rules football require tackling of players. These sports are often known as full-
contact, as the sport cannot be undertaken without contact. Other sports have
contact, but such events are illegal under the rules of the game or are accidental
and do not form part of the sport.

What Is It

In martial arts, a throw is a grappling technique that involves off-balancing or

lifting an opponent, and throwing them to the ground, in Japanese martial
arts referred to as nage-waza, 投げ技, "throwing technique". Throws usually involve
a rotating motion, the practitioner performing the throw disconnects with the
opponent, and ends balanced and on their feet as opposed to a takedown where
both finish on the ground.

A strike is a directed physical attack with either a part of the human body or with
an inanimate object (such as a weapon) intended to cause blunt
trauma or penetrating trauma upon an opponent.
There are many different varieties of strikes. A strike with the hand closed into a
fist is called a punch, a strike with the leg or foot is referred to as a kick and a
strike with the head is called a head-butt. There are also other variations employed
in martial arts and combat sports.
A kick is a physical strike using the leg, in unison usually with an area of the knee
or lower using the foot, heel, tibia (shin), ball of the foot, blade of the foot, toes
or knee (the latter is also known as a knee strike). This type of attack is used
frequently by hooved animals as well as humans in the context of stand-up
fighting. Kicks play a significant role in many forms of martial arts, such
as savate, taekwondo, MMA, sikaran, karate, Pankration, Kung
Fu, Vovinam, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Yaw-Yan, capoeira, silat and kalaripayattu.
Kicks are a universal act of aggression among humans.

What I Have
Learned
Summary:
Throws can however also be followed into a top position, in which case the person
executing the throw does not disengage from the opponent. Certain throwing
techniques called sacrifice throws (sutemi-waza, 捨身技, "sacrifice technique") involve
putting oneself in a potentially disadvantageous position, such as on the ground, in
order to execute a throw.

Strikes are the key focus of several sports and arts,

including boxing, savate, karate, muay thai, taekwondo and wing chun, some martial
arts also use the fingertips, wrists, forearms, shoulders, back and hips to strike an
opponent as well as the more conventional fists, palms, elbows, knees and feet that are
common in combat sports. Other sports and arts, such as wrestling employ no strikes
in focusing on grappling techniques. There is also a form of karate called goju
ryu which focuses on pressure points (joints) in the legs and arms.

Kicking is also prominent from its use in many sports, especially those
called football. The best known of these sports is association football, also known
as soccer.

What I Can Do
LET’S DO THIS
Instructions: Carefully perform the following movement that is related to 3 basic
technique except for throwing. (Kicking and Striking only)

 Basic Punching (Perform at least 5 punche in the air)

 Turn your whole body and pivot your feet on ALL PUNCHES EXCEPT THE
JAB.
 Maintain your stance and balance for better power and mobility.
 Make sure the non-punching hand is defending the other side of your body.
 Exhale sharply on every shot.
 All boxing punches are basically a variation of straight punches (elbow
straight), hook punches (elbow sideways), or uppercut punches (elbow down).

 Front kick (Perform at least 5 kick in the air)

 Begin in a side on stance, feet two shoulder widths apart, with the kicking
leg back. Feet should be parallel, pointing slightly to the side. Keep the
guard up throughout.
 Drive the rear leg forwards as if to knee an opponent. Keep the body upright,
with the weight on the standing foot.
 Straighten the kicking leg by extending the knee towards the target. You
should aim to strike with the ball of the foot by pulling the toes back.

Page |4
 Recover the kicking leg by snapping it back into the flexed position as you
prepare to set it down.
 Set the kicking foot down landing forwards as you complete the kick. From
here you can either perform additional moves, or return to the starting
position.

Preventing Sports Injuries

Exercise is good for the body and with the proper precautions, sports injuries can
often be prevented. The quality of protective equipment - padding, helmets, shoes,
mouth guards - have helped to improve the safety in sports. But, you can still be
susceptible to injury. Always contact your healthcare provider before starting any
type of physical activity, especially vigorous types of exercises or sports.
