Introduction to Personal Development Ms. Marie Christine Pajanil LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to
be able to: Understand and explain in his or her own words what personal development is; Cite his or her spiritual and religious beliefs and how these influence his or her personal development; Connect the concept of personal development in his or her own experiences as an adolescent. Human Development and Personal Development Developmental scientists identified the three aspects or domains of human development as (Papalia & Feldman 2012): 1. Physical Development - covers the growth of the body and the brain, motor and sensory skills, and even physical health.
2. Cognitive Development - covers our
capacity to learn, to speak, to understand, to reason, and to create. 3. Psychosocial Development - includes our social interactions with other people, our emotions, attitudes, personality, beliefs, and values. Human development is also influenced by: Heredity or the inborn traits passed on by the generations of offsprings from both sides of the biological parent's families; Human development is also influenced by: Environment is the world outside of ourselves and the experiences that result from our contact and interaction with this external world; and Human development is also influenced by: Maturation is the natural progression of the brain and the body that affects the cognitive, psychological and social dimensions of a person. Is it Personality Development or Personal Development? The word personal is define as: Belonging or relating to a particular person; Made or designed to be use by one person; Someone who's job involves working for or helping a particular person; and Of, relating to, or affecting a particular person. Is it Personality Development or Personal Development? The word personality, on the other hand, is define as: The set of emotional qualities, ways of behaving, that makes a person different from other people; Attractive qualities that make something unsual or interesting; Distinction or excellence of personal and social traits; also a person having such quality. Is it Personality Development or Personal Development? And finally, the word development is define as: The act or process of growing or causing something to grow or become larger or more advanced; The act or process of creating something over a period of time; and The state of being created or made more advanced. Personality Development has led to global businesses in image enhancement, fashion, body contouring, modeling, and beauty pageants, among others. Personal Development is the process of self- reflection, self-awareness, acceptance, and learning new values, attitudes, behavior, and thinking skills to reach one's fullest potential. AREAS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
The following is a high level list of areas of personal
development. Each area is equally important to the improvement of your life as as adolescent.
1. HEALTH - Is a state of complete physical, mental
and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. AREAS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
2. FINANCE - To live a comfortable life, maintain a
family, or just follow your dreams it is fundamental that you have enough money or good financial capacity.
3. SOCIABILITY - Is the tendency or quality of liking to
meet and be in the company of other people. AREAS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
4. SPIRITUALITY - Means the quality of being
concerned with the human spirit as opposed to material things.
5. HABITS - A recurrent, often unconscious, pattern or
behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition. Human nature is very complex. There is no one singular school of thought in any form of scientific study including psychology, which can completely and satisfactorily define human nature. Human beings have the sole capacity to reflect upon itself, and in the process develop self- awareness, become motivated, and then desire to grow and change for the better; and are prompted to mature and improved until it reaches its desired levelof development. The understanding of human development began with Homo sapiens walking the earth, and cavemen drew figures to express experiences. Western philosophers, particularly Greek thinkers, began to question the self and human nature. Plato's Republic emphasizes character development in education, a concept that has been linked to social responsibility since early human development. Infancy (neonate and up to 5 STAGES OF HUMAN one year age) DEVELOPMENT Toddler ( one to five years of age) Childhood (three to eleven years old) - early childhood is from three to eight years old, and middle childhood is from nine to eleven years old. Adolescence or teenage (from 12 to 18 years old) Adulthood. Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers were two prominent proponents of Humanistic Psychology, with Maslow focusing on the five stages of human development and Rogers arguing that individuals have the capacity to move towards matarity within themselves. Personal development, a part of psychology, is intertwined with brain and physical body development. Adolescence, the transition period between childhood and early adulthood, is typically between 11 or 12 years old and lasts until around 18 years old, with differing estimates among scientists and psychologists. Biological changes during adolescence lead to cognitive and affective changes. Adolescents can reason abstractly, become more inquisitive about philosophy, religion, and politics, and question their identity. Puberty also affects relationships with family and friends, with friends becoming the center of these connections. THANK YOU!
