CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
Concrete blocks are widely used in construction. Different types are used for different purposes. In
comparison to conventional bricks, hollow blocks have been found to have better uniform quality,
longer durability, faster speed of construction, and lower labor requirements. In view of these
advantages, hollow blocks are increasingly used in different construction activities. These activities
include, but not limited to, load bearing walls, interior walls, panel walls, retaining walls and compound
walls.

Background of the Study

In Philippines, most industrial and domestic activities are associated with significant
amounts of non-biodegradable solid waste, which include a wide range of plastic and glass
waste. The research studies to be undertaken intended to determine the efficiency of
reusing waste plastic in production of floor tile, roof tiles and hollow block plastic.
Utilization of these waste materials is a partial solution to environmental and ecological
Problems. Use of plastic and glass not only helps in getting them utilized in such types of
material, it helps in reducing the cost of concrete.

Statement of the problem

This aims to determine the possibility of Waste Materials as an alternative component

in Making Hollow blocks . It specifically seeks to answer the following questions:

1.In what particular measurement of mixture needed in making the hallow blocks?

2.How durable the hallow blocks are?

3.How effective is the waste materials as an additive component in making hallow

blocks?

Significance of the Study

Fundamentally, this study will render valuable contribution to the following stakeholders.

Students. Students will be able to learned in making hallow blocks out of recycled

materials

General Public. This study would help our community by giving them a source of

livelihood that can give them extra income

Business Entities. This will help the business establishment to earned

Government. This study will help lessen the problem of improper disposal of garbage
