SKILLS TO SUCCEED ACADEMY

READY… STEADY… PREP!

This pack contains four activities to help you apply what you have learned in the ‘Ready,
Steady, Prep’ module.
In Activity 1 you receive budgeting guidance.
In Activity 2 you will use a checklist to prepare you for a new job.
In Activity 3 you will review documents needed for your first day of work.
In Activity 4 you will prepare questions you want to ask regarding your contract or new
role.

WHEN CONSIDERING A JOB OFFER, IT’S IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT SOME KEY
AREAS:

1. Whether you are capable of doing the job

o You don’t need to have all the skills and knowledge for the job but you
need to be aware of whether you will be able to do the job or be able to
build on the skills and experience you have.
2. Whether the job is helping you achieve your career goals
o Even if the job is not your dream job, it may help you build your skills and
work experience.
3. Whether you are able to manage on the salary provided
o You may find that the first few months can be difficult as there are
various expenses you will have. You should put a budgeting plan in
place to help you with this.

WHEN STARTING A NEW JOB THERE ARE MANY THINGS YOU CAN DO TO
PREPARE:

1. Prepare or read documents in advance.

2. Figure out how to get to work.
3. Plan your clothing and appearance.
4. Adjust your usual routine and personal life. For example, child care
arrangements, banking, groceries, hobbies, etc.

ACTIVITY 1: BUDGETING
In the ‘Ready…Steady…Prep’ module, you saw that Bryan needed to do some
budgeting. If you need help with this when considering a job offer or after starting a new
job, there are multiple free online budgeting trackers that can help. However, you may
need some help filling them out. To do this, you can go to an advisor or any trusted
adult.
Remember, there are other things to gain from work, such as experience and skills. So,
think about everything before you accept a job offer.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT YOUR NOTES

When you budget, you’ll need to Ex: Rent, Utilities, Food

week. The most important thing to
remember is that there is a difference
between what you need and what you
want.

Think about what your necessary

outgoing costs will be and note them in
the box on the right.

You’ll also need to know how much Ex: Find out when you get paid and what

account. Remember that your wages insurance, etc).
might be reduced by tax.

and from where and what might affect
the exact amount you receive. You can
make notes in the box on the right.

Here are some of the things to consider when budgeting. There are some boxes for you
to write down anything you think may help you. Examples are included to help you get
started.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT YOUR NOTES

You will need to think about what your Ex: You may pay for weekly gym
necessary costs are for living and what else classes. You could look for cheaper
you regularly spend money on. When you classes or go less frequently if
budget, you may find you cannot afford necessary.
everything you want all the time.

Think about what other things you spend

your money on. Prioritize them so you know
what you would be willing to spend less on if
necessary. Use the box on the right to make
any notes.

You may find that you need to cut some of your spending to manage your budget.
Setting goals and working towards them can help you keep on track with your budget.
You can set yourself short term and long term financial goals. A short-term goal might
be to only spend Php 500.00 this week and save the rest, or a long-term goal might be
to save Php 10,000.00 for a refrigerator.
You may find times where you don’t have any money left after paying for your
necessary expenses. If you want to save more or spend more on other things, you don’t
have to go over budget. Instead, why not see where you could reduce your expenses?
TOP TIPS

Here are some tips to make sure you stay on budget:

o Make sure you understand the difference between things you want and things
you need. For example, rather than buying lunch pack a bag lunch. This makes
meals cheaper.
o Keep a log of your spending and check it to see if there are things you can cut
out. There are some free online budgeting tools that can help with this. Search
online using phrases like, “online budgeting tools” to find one that works for
you.

o Look at ways you can cut down on what you spend. For example, if you go out
every day of the weekend, maybe think about cutting it down to only once on
the weekend.
o See if your bank can offer you some free budgeting advice.

Use this activity and the notes you have made when you do your budget. You can also
take this with you to your career advisor when you get help with your budget.

ACTIVITY 2: PREPARATION CHECKLIST

You saw Karen and Daniel go through some steps to help them prepare for their new
jobs. Here is the checklist that was shown in the module. Use this to help you make
sure you’re ready for your first day at a new job.

It’s a good idea to make sure you know where these documents are before having a job.
If you are asked for them when you are going on an interview, you can easily provide
them.
Remember that it can take longer than you think to get a hold of some of these
documents, so give yourself enough time.

ACTIVITY 4: CONTRACTS AND CODES OF CONDUCT

An employment contract states what is expected of you, but also, what you should
expect from your employer. It is important to review your contract before you sign it. You
should check things like:
o Salary
o The date your salary will be given
o Benefits/Vacation Days
o Information about your role and responsibility

Can you think of anything else that may be important to check when reading through
your contract?
Use the space below to write anything else you wish to check or list any questions you
have after reading your contract, benefits package and/or role description. For example,
if you have a sales job, you may want to look for any bonus information; if you are
working part time, check to see if your salary has been adjusted appropriately.
