Values are a person’s or people’s belief about the desirable or good behavior and as well
what is one's judgment of what is important in life.

2. Write at least 10 values that you possess and rank them according to what you think
is important to you.
1. Faith
2. Love
3. Happiness
4. Kindness
5. Trust
6. Learning
7. Optimism
8. Simplicity
9. Empathy
10. Humor
3. Do you agree that using “po” and “opo” and kissing the hands of our parents are signs of
respect and therefore should be preserved? Why? Explain briefly but concisely.
Yes indeed. It should be preserved because aside from showing respect, it is also a
huge part of our culture. It shows that Filipinos have this certain value that we can carry and
be proud of wherever we are. It is a simple act for others but it matters for us especially that
our ancestors passed it from generations to generations up until now and we should carry it
until to the future generations. Furthermore, this value should continue and will never be
forgotten considering that this is what makes us unique and valuable people.

4. Do you believe in the saying that “kung ano ang puno ay siyang bunga?” Explain.
Even though it depends on the person, however it’s somehow, yes. Mostly, children
have adapted their parents’ traits since they see with their own eyes the actions and how
their parents behave or how they handle things. It is simply because they’re their parents
and they must be their role models. If the parents are setting good examples or having that
good values shown, accordingly the children will follow and as well as if the parents are doing
something evil or wrong, some children thought that it’s right considering that their parents
are doing that. Therefore, this saying can be handled literally but as we dig deeper into the
message and its meaning that it wants to imply, it reflects the people’s life in a realistic way.
However there are some situations where the children are knowledgeable enough to
determine the right and wrong and decide to follow what’s right for them. It depends on the
individual’s perceptions.

5. Explain “Values are caught and not taught.”

Values are caught and not taught. You can’t force someone to possess the certain
value that you want them to have if he/she is not willing to have it. Instead, values are caught
by seeing someone doing or performing it. By having an example of the certain value on
action makes them perceive that as a good role model and catch that act and apply it on
themselves. For example if the teacher was always early in school, it sets as the example to
her students to be punctual as well. However if the teacher told her students to be early but
she was always late, her students would not follow her since she herself couldn’t even make
it. Students might catch the value if they see that their teachers are consistently living out
what they “inculcate”.
