ROBOT

A robot is a machine. But it is not just any machine. It is a special

not. Most robots just look like machines.

Long ago, people imagined robots. Over 2,000 years ago, a famous
poet imagined robots. The poet’s name was Homer. His robots were made
of gold. They cleaned things and they made things. But they were not real. 15
3 They were imaginary. Nobody was able to make a real robot. The first real
robot was made in 1961. It was called Unimate. It was used to help make
cars. It looked like a giant arm.

In the future, we will have even more robots. They will do things that
we can’t do. Or they will do things that are too dangerous for us. Robots 20
will help us fight fires. They will help us fight fires. They will help us fight
wars. They will help us fight sickness. They will help us discover things.
4 They will help make life better.

PASSAGE 2

Directions : Read the passage. Then answer the questions below.

Materials

A material is what something is made of. There are 5 basic

1 materials. Most things are made with these materials. Some things are
made of metal. Some things are made of glass. Some things are made
of wood. Some things are made of cloth. And some things are made of
plastic. There are some other materials. But they are not used as much 5
as these 5 materials.

Let’s talk about metal first. Metal is very heavy. And it is very hard
2 and strong. It usually feels cool if you touch it. We use metal to make
lots of things. We use it for forks and knives. We use it for keys. We use
it for cars. We use it for these things because it is very strong. 10

Next, let’s talk about glass. Glass is very smooth. It feels cool to
3 touch. It is not as heavy as metal. It is hard. But it is not strong. It breaks
very easily! Then why do we use it? We use it because it is clear! You
can see through glass! That’s why we use it for windows. That’s also
why we use it for glasses. 15

Now, let’s talk about wood. Wood is lighter than metal and glass. It
4 is not as strong as metal. But it is much stronger than glass. We use
wood to make lots of things. Things made from wood are usually light
and hard and strong. Chairs and tables are made from wood. Pencils
are made from wood. 20

Now let’s talk about cloth. Cloth is very light. It is much lighter than
5 wood. And it is very soft. We use cloth to make lots of things. For
example, it is used to make clothing. And it is used to make blankets.

Finally, let’s talk about plastic. Plastic is also very light. But it is
6 different from cloth. Sometimes it is soft. And sometimes it is hard. 25
Plastic can be used to make thin plastic bags. These are light, soft, and
strong. But plastic can also be used to make bicycle helmets. These are
light, hard, and strong. A helmet and a bag seem different. But they are
both made from plastic.

PASSAG1E 3

Directions : Read the passage. Then answer the questions below.

Have you ever heard the sound of a hummingbird? They make a

1 buzzing noise when they fly. They make this noise because they beat their
wings so fast. They beat their wings up to 80 times a second. All thet
flapping makes a lot of noise. That’s why we call them hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds fly in a unique way. They move their wings so fast that 5
2 they can hover. This means that they can stay in one spot in the middle of
the air, like a helicopter. Sometimes they fly or hover upside down. They
are the only bird that flies backward.

Hummingbirds are small. One type called the bee hummingbird is the
3 smallest bird in the world. Bee hummingbirds weigh less than a penny. 10
They are just a little bit bigger than bees. I guess that’s where they get
their name.

Hummingbirds move fast. It takes a lot of energy to move as fast as

4 they do. This means that they need to eat a lot of food. Their favourite
food is nectar, a sweet liquid inside of some flowers. They drink more than 15
their own weight in nectar daily. They have to visit hundreds of flowers to
get enough nectar to live. They can only store enough energy to survive
through the night. They live on the edge.

Hummingbirds don’t use their long beaks like straws. They have a
5 tongue just like you. They use their tongues for eating. They flick their 20
tongues in and out of their mouths while inside of flowers. They lap up
nectar. Flowers give them the energy that they need.

Hummingbirds help flowers too. They get pollen on their heads and
6 bills when they feed. Flowers use pollen to make seeds. Hummingbirds
help pollen get from one flower to the next. This helps flowers make more 25
seeds. More seeds means more flowers. More flowers means more food for
hummingbirds. Isn’t it nice how that works out?

PASSAGE 4

Directions : Read the passage. Then answer the questions below.

Consumer products are usually divided into three groups: convenience,

1 shopping, and specialty products. Each group is based on the way people buy
products.

Convenience products are products that a consumer needs but he or

2 she is not willing to spend very much time or effort shopping for. 5
Convenience products are usually inexpensive, frequently purchased items.
Some common examples are bread, newspapers, toothpaste and cooking oil.
Buyers spend little time planning the purchase of a convenience product.
They also do not compare brands or sellers.

The second group, shopping products, are those products that 10

3 customers feel are worth the time and effort to compare with competing
products. Furniture, refrigerators, cars, and televisions are examples of
shopping products. Because these products are expected to last long time,
they are purchased less frequently than convenience products.

The last group is specialty products. Specialty products are consumer 15

4 products that the customer really wants and makes a special effort to find
and buy. Buyers actually plan the purchase of a specialty product. They know
what they want and will not accept a substitute. High-tech cameras, a pair of
skis, and a haircut by a certain stylist are examples of specialty products. In
searching for specialty products, buyers do not compare alternatives. 20
