Coaching strategies

The first strategy I think we’re using is relationship building. During the course of our
coaching meetings we really began to narrow the focus of what she wants to achieve. I think
she has also become more comfortable overall and is more willing to share her thoughts than
initially.
Goal setting is another strategy that we’ve been using. Through our discussions, it
allowed us to finally land on video editing for the main focus. This in turn led to the creation of a
video editing checklist which in itself is a strategy to keep things focused and outline steps for
success.
Finally, I was able to model the video editing process for her. I used video for modeling
which is what she requested. Modeling in video is also the strategy she wants to use for her
culinary students. .

Skill / affective changes

At this point I haven’t really witnessed a change in skill, mainly because she hasn’t yet
done any video editing. I do think that there has been slight movement in affective change in
that the goal has become clearer with time. This indicates to me that coaching should be an
ongoing and methodical process. It took several meetings before we could actually pinpoint the
goal.

Reflection on challenges / solutions

During this coaching cycle, I had an unforeseen challenge from the Assistant Director of
our Tech Department. I learned that the camera we had been using to record coaching videos
and planned to use for Almeida to model culinary techniques for her students actually belonged
to the tech department. The camera had been loaned to me by our school's Instructional Tech
so I was unaware it actually belonged to the district.
The solution of course was just resilience. It is just as easy, if not easier to record using a
phone or webcam. It also turned out that video editing was more of a coaching priority for my
coachee than actual recording.
