Coaching strategies

Relationship building continues to be a strategy that we are using when working

together. We get more comfortable with one another each time we meet to work on this video
editing project. I think she has also begun to build more confidence in her ability to achieve her
goal and it really shows in the coaching video.
I guided her through the checklist as she edited her first video. The checklist is a tool that
she’ll be able to use going forward. I think it was easy for her to follow and appears to give
enough detail for her to be successful.
Goal setting continues as we decide on what steps need to happen next in the process.
She appears pretty confident in her ability andis willing to try editing a video on her own. She
says she’ll write down any questions she has so we can revisit, if necessary. She is also aware
that I am always available and she can stop by anytime.
I did some verbal coaching during this session but mostly just observed her using the
editing software. I was able to positively reinforce her successes and answer questions she had.
At the conclusion of the coaching session, I felt like she was pretty comfortable in her abilities
and possibly even a little excited about its potential.

Skill / affective changes

The biggest change accomplished through this process was building Almeida’s self
efficacy. As we finished up the session there, I am confident that she can use the editing
software to accomplish her modeling goals. I also feel like she is excited about the software and
will actually use it.

Reflection on challenges / solutions

One challenge we faced during this cycle was time constraints. We were off for Spring
break the first week of the module, and really only had two days available to complete the
coaching / filming. We’re both pretty flexible people so it really wasn’t much of an issue. We just
got together after PLC one afternoon and knocked it out.
It took me a minute to wrap my brain around how I would gather data. After recording the
editing session, I realized that observation was really my data gathering tool. It helped me
identify her strengths and made me aware of areas where maybe I hadn’t provided enough
detail or she needed more explanation. I was able to address those on the fly.
Probably the biggest challenge was just learning the software as I was coaching how to
use it. Each successive coaching video I created became easier because I’d had more practice.
This was very encouraging and helped me understand that this would also be true for Almeida.
