EXAMPLE 1: There are 20 739 books in a library. In early February, 9 788 books were borrowed, and 5 714 were returned. How many books are still
left?

SOLUTION:

Initial book count = 20 739 books

Total books borrowed = 9 788 books

Total books returned = 5 714 books

Operation: Substract, then add.

20 739 − 9 788 + 5 714 = 16 665

ANSWER: 16 665 books left

EXAMPLE 2: Total of 18 300 pencils has been produced by Afiq's Factory and divided equally among 25 schools. Calculate the number of pencils
received by 11 schools.

SOLUTION:

Operation: Divide, then multiply.
