TRUE PROFESSIONALS: LORRAINE TULLISH
Lorraine Tullish has a special way of looking at people: she notices their strong and weak points and then finds ways to
emphasise the strengths and hide the weaknesses. “There is a strong link between personality and appearance,” she says,
“and it goes both ways – your personality affects the choices you make about your appearance, but your appearance also has
some influence on your personality.”
When she was at school, Lorraine spent ages trying to decide what job she wanted. “I had too many dreams and I knew I
couldn’t follow them all. One person can’t be a doctor, an interior designer, a teacher and an actress at the same time.”
Finally, she decided to follow her mother’s advice and studied Art and Design. She then worked for a fashion designer for a
year, but the job didn’t give her enough satisfaction. “I missed people,” Lorraine says, “I have always wanted to work with
people, to communicate with people, to help people.” She went back to university and gained a degree in psychology. “And
then, as I was looking for a job as a psychologist, I suddenly realised I didn’t have to give up my artistic career,” she says.
She put an advertisement in a glossy magazine offering her services as a consultant for people who needed advice on their
image.
Today, ten years later, Lorraine’s consultancy is among the most successful businesses in London. Her list of clients is
impressive, it includes the names of celebrities, politicians, company owners and company directors. She works individually
with each person: she first observes them to discover what they are like, when they feel comfortable and what makes them
anxious or annoyed. She then gives them detailed information about the style which suits their personality and which makes
them look their best. She also teaches them how to move and how to speak. “In a way, I am a therapist, a teacher, a designer
and even an actress. And I have enormous satisfaction when my clients come back to tell me that they feel happy with
themselves and that others feel good with them.”
