Zeolites are porous minerals with high Enhances Nutrient Availability

absorbency and ion‐exchange capacity. They
have a microporous network composition
consisting of tetrahedral of Al2O3 and SiO2.
This framework generates cavities where
water and cations are inserted/exchanged.
These ion-exchange properties of zeolites can
be very beneficial in agriculture. They can be
used as both carriers of nutrients and a
medium to free nutrients.
Due to its structure and properties this natural,
inert, and non-toxic mineral can be used as a
slowly releasing carrier of fertilizer, a soil
amendment additive and for increasing the
nutrient and water use efficiency.
Zeolite serves as natural and non-toxic source
of silicon. Soil application of silicon enhances
the uptake of other nutrients by crops and soil.
Silicon boosts plant’s ability to withstand stress-
es from disease, insects, and environmental
pressure.
Increases Water Holding Capacity
Due to the high porosity of its crystalline struc-
ture, zeolite increases the soil water-holding
capacity and its availability to crops. Zeolite
enhances the lateral flow of water toward the
root zone during irrigation. This leads to the
preservation of the water needed for irrigation.
Improves Soil Structure
Zeolite improves soil structure by pairing ion
exchange capacity with an affinity for ammo-
nia and potassium. These properties allow
zeolite to buffer soil and prevent the toxicity
that is often caused by a build-up of ammonia.

Improves Fertilizer Efficiency

Zeolites promote the nutrient-retention capaci-
ty of the soils by improving the slower release
of the nutrients for uptake by crops. Zeolite
locks essential nutrients and compounds into
its structure, releasing them gradually into the
soil and root system of plants.

Balances pH
Zeolite is not acidic but is marginally alkaline,
and its use with fertilizers can help buffer soil
pH levels, thus reducing the need for lime appli-
cation.
