MTES2092M Mathematical Processes Quiz 1

(30 minutes)

Questions for this quiz is based on the following situations.

6 + (-2) 4 + (-7) 5 + (-5) 2a + a 2a + b 2a + b + a

Situation A Situation B

You are required to choose ONE situation to answer the following questions in the
space provided.

1. Describe how would you create opportunities for your students to “do
mathematics” based on the examples in the situation that you have chosen.
[6 marks]

Mathematics KSSM focuses on developing individuals who internalise and

practise mathematical fikrah. In the context of mathematics education, mathematical
fikrah refers to the quality of pupils to be developed through the education system.
Pupils who acquired mathematical fikrah is capable of doing mathematics and
understanding mathematical ideas. To achieve this focuses, teachers need to provide
successful lessons that involves students fully in planned lesson plans.

Based on Situation A, I will let my students to learn the concept of addition of

positive integer and negative integer by looking at the symbols after the plus symbol.
When plus meet the negative integer, the plus symbol will be replaced by subtraction.
For example, 6 + (-2), it will become 6 - 2, so the answer is 4. Same goes to 4 + (-7), it
will become 4 - 7 and the answer is -3. Besides that, I will explain this concept of
addition of integers by using the number line. The student just need to count the
movement of addition in the number line itself.

2. Explain the instrumental understanding and the relational understanding

involved in learning the concepts in the situation that you have chosen.
[4 marks]

Instrumental understanding can be thought of as knowing the rules and

procedures without understanding why those rules or procedures work. Students who
have been taught instrumentally can perform calculations and also apply procedures
but do not necessarily understand the mathematics behind the rules or procedures.
The learning of addition of the integers by looking at the symbols is one of the
instrumental understanding. The students just need to remember if they see the plus
symbol followed by the negative integers, they just need to replace the symbol with
minus.

On the other hand, relational understanding, can be thought of as understanding

how and why the rules and procedures work. Students who are taught relationally are
more likely to remember the procedures because they have truly understood why they
work. The learning of the concept through number line is relational understanding. By
using the number line, students know how exactly the rules and procedures work.
