Explain why is relational understanding important in the learning of mathematics.

Answer:
Relational understanding important in the learning of mathematics due to develop greater
relational understanding and application of mathematical concept. Student who are taught
relationally more able to remember the procedure because they truly understand the way
they work. Thus, student more likely to retain their understanding longer with their
understanding. Besides that, student more likely to connect new learning with previous
learning. The other important of relational understanding in learning of mathematics is
develop positive attitude toward mathematics learning. As the student understand the
procedure or work in mathematics and getting new knowledge will satisfy them. Thus, they
feel enjoy in learning mathematic.

Question 2
Explain an example of “doing mathematics” in the classroom.

Answer:
Doing mathematics is generate strategies for problem solving, applying the mathematical
processes such as connection, representation, reasoning and communication and the
person being involved actively whether physically, mentally or socially. In classroom, student
is given a group activity to understand the relation between the number of symmetry axis for
regular polygon and number of sides of the polygon. Student has divided into several group
of 4. Teacher give student a few papers that contain regular and irregular polygon shape.
Student need to cut the paper according to the shape of polygon. Student need to corporate
in group to folding the polygon in order to determine the symmetry axis. While the other
student in group will record her or his friend finding in table form. Upon completing their task,
they need to discuss on their finding on relation on number of symmetry axis and number of
sides of polygon. Later they need to represent their finding in class. Finally, student
representative will conclude on their finding which is, the number of symmetry axis is equal
to number of sides of polygon for regular polygon.
