Animation: Future of Entertainment

Animation has been a very important part of the entertainment industry for very long.
As the quality of picture and sound increases it leads to the growth of animation
industry.

It is developed from the hand drawn traditional animation to the computer-generated

graphics and VFX. The leads to higher consumption of animation content. Art,
storytelling, filmmaking, composition and many other factors combines and gives
good visual experience to the viewer. There is a huge number of growths in
animation companies which offers animation products and services.

Along with the growing animation content, there are many challenges for the growth
of animation industry like artificial Intelligence (AI), VR animation, metaverse, and lot
of other technologies.

“Animation can explain whatever the mind of man can conceive” -Walt Disney

What is animation?
Animation is derived from the Latin word which means “Liveliness”. In animation we
use still images to make visuals, illusion of a motion, along with some transactions.
By this process animaters manipulate still figures to a moving body or moving
images. Since the birth of animation, it has gone through various changes like firstly
it was about hand-drawn or painted pictures or paintings on transparent sheets to
make a film then after the era of computers the animation was done on computers
which is made animation a little bit easier and now AI is also used in animation.

Types of Animation
The animation industry has been involving since its birth. The growth, arrival and
adoption of the latest methods and technologies has made the animation industry
dynamic and competitive. Due to the continuous growth and continuous experiments
with the process and methods of animation, it has given us different types of
animation.
1. Traditional Animation
2. Rotoscope Animation
3. Motion Animation
4. Stop Animation
5. 2D Animation
6. 3D Animation

Traditional Animation
Traditional animation is widely known by many names like cel animation, and frame
by frame animation, traditional animation, and many other. Before the arrival of the
computer’s animation, all the animation are done by traditional animation method.
Traditional method of animation is super time consuming and requires a lot of
perfection.
Traditional animation requires a lot of human labor as each frame is drawn is drawn
by hand. Each frame is little bit different with respect to the previous drawing which
gives a natural feel of the movement of the seen. Once a seen is drawn then it is
transferred to the transparent celluloid sheets called cels. Once it is done then the
sequence of frame is loaded on the cels, then special cameras are used for the
photography process for animation.

Rotoscope Animation
Rotoscoping animation is a technique that requires still image or moving footage for
tracing or creating a finished seen for animation.
In this process we don’t use drawing pictures instead, we do tracing of live action
from a footage, which is less time taking and increases the speed of making
animation. However, this process is not widely used because it is very expensive.
Earlier this animation process was labor intensive and only those who are good at
artistic skills and best for the job. But after the arrival of computers graphics, it
became simpler.

Motion Graphics
Motion graphics is used for creating short pieces of animation for short message or
conveying information, it is different from other animation types while other animation
types are used for making animation films. It has very wide range of application.
They are widely used in Television (TVs) and film opening credits and creative
adverts and are today used in memes present on social media. Motion graphic is a
basic movement in alphabets /graphics that involves in graphic element placed on
frames that creates illusion of motion.
The introduction in Apple Mac in 1980s was a big innovation for animates to be
creative and easy to use.

Stop Motion
Stop motion is a different type of animation in which we use different types of objects
instead of hand drawn pictures and images and CGI to create an animation film. In
this process we use objects and camera to create the illusion of motion. This method
is based on snaps taken of an object while manually moving the object and playing
the snapes in a order/ sequence.

2D Animation
2D Animation is the traditional animation which shows the images in a certain order
like 24fps, 30fps, 60fps are most used 2d animation order. It requires two-
dimensional environment.
It is done in hand drawn images, computers have made 2d animation easier. It is
very effective in storytelling.

3D Animation
It is the process of creating 3d objects in 3d background space. 3d animation is more
expensive than traditional animation. Real estate, medicine, and education are some
of the industries that heavily uses 3d animation.

Trends in Animation industry

1. Usage of hybrid animation
2. Adoption of Vertical Videos
3. Growth of VR animation
4. Incorporation of Depth Sensors
5. 2D Amination videos for marketing
6. Enhanced use of Kinetic Typography
7. Rise of Whiteboard Animation

Marketing Sector
Various brand widely use animation for the marketing and branding from the very
start of the company. Animation are eye catching and interesting to watch and very
cost effective in comparison to live action videos.
The unique way of storytelling is very immersive and cost effective in animation and
it gives unlimited possibility of creativity.

Education Sector
Recently animation industry has shown a great impact in education sector. There are
many educational institutions which explains various complex topics in an easy
manner. Educational material is a great way to develop their interest in a certain
subject. After pandemic large organization are using animation methods for teaching
and giving education in a very interesting way.

Healthcare Sector
Health care is continuous evolving sector, and many technology improvs daily for the
battement of healthcare facilities. 3d animation in this sector helps sharing
knowledge to the less medical literacy.
Explainer video, social media campaigns, training videos and promotional videos,
animated videos play important role in the health care industry. It also allows to
break the language barrier and communicate information effectively and easily.

Gaming Industry
Animation is widely used in animation mainly 3d and 2d animation. 3D animation is
most popular for giving gaming very realistic experience to the user. 3d animation
gained popularity from 1990s.

Architecture and Engineering

In the field of architecture and engineering animation is very popular. Mainly
computer generated 3d animation is very important for grabbing attention of clients.
Animation helps client see the realistic view of the finished product. By creating
miniature module in real estate industry, we can attract client’s attention.

Challenges of Animation Industry

Animation industry is very large and contains different methods, and the animation
industry has lot of huddles to cross for the continuous growth. There are some
challenges for the animation industry.

High Demand
As the online content is increasing the demand of animation is also increasing. As
the processes is time consuming so new content takes time.
Production of high-quality content within the availability of certain time sometimes
become very difficult.

New Technology
From the birth animation is continuously evolving, and those animaters resisted the
new technology has left behind. There is tech like AR, VR blockchain, and many
other are the major drivers of animation.
Many people are afraid of AI in upcoming dates, for the growth of animation industry
continuous adoptability towards new tech is very important.

Property Protection
Rights plays very important role in animation studios, so that their creative work of
art should remain unique and to protect it from getting copied.
There are very harsh laws that enables creators to copyright their work to prevent
unauthorized use of animated character.
Disney owns approx. 2300 active patent character that are protected by U.S. patent
office by 2020 Oct.
For the smaller companies it is very difficult for the enforcement of these laws.
For the small companies it is very challenging to invest huge amount for copyrights
or patents.

Future of Animation Industry

The animation industry has been continuous challenges and changes since it came
into existence. As it is continuous growing and evolving in every stage and have
more scope to grow. Some of the potential changes that have seen in animation
industry are (indiefilmhustle, 2022)given billow.

Streaming Services
Streaming started with the introduction of YouTube, and later followed by Netflix,
Hulu, Hotstar+ and so many more. During covise time is has grown and took a boost
Netflix has recently invested 5billion in animation content. As it is continuously
growing during pandemic in 2020 7 million people cancelled cable TV.

AI and ML
Many animaters afraid of AI in animation as it will surly impact their working process
but Ai has wide range of application for animation. AI and ML in the animation
industry has a huge potential of growth.

Virtual Production
Virtual production came to rescue of production houses. It is an excellent
development in animation industry. The global virtual production market is expected
to grow around 18.28% from 2023 to 2030 to reach 6.78Billion by 2030.
