Learning Tasks 04 – Word & System Software (SW)

Very Important Note: Read the instructions for your practical tasks carefully step by step and do the
instructions step by step. Note that if you skip an instruction or do any instructions out of order,
it could easily ruin your whole learning experience and you may have to start again!

Content covered:
• Self-study about System Software theory
• FCS Word (Basics) Lessons 6-7 to learn how to use MS Word
• Using a Typing Tutor to learn how to type faster (Highly Recommended)

Tasks:
1. Self-Study Theory
Work through the W04 Self-Study tasks in a folder in this week’s section in iLearn Moodle – this

A weekly test on this material will be part of your Week 04 Application tasks.
2. File Management
In File Explorer, create the folder S:\module-code\Weekly Tasks\Week 04 Word where you must
save all the files you work on during Week 04 – this Learning Guide and the W04 Application Guide
tasks.
3. FCS Word Processing (Basics): Lesson 6
Read ALL the points below BEFORE you start the task.
• Open the LATEST FCS Word Processing (Basics) document from the Learning Material
block in Moodle – this material is new, and although it has been reviewed, there may be errors
that we have missed, so please make sure that you open the LATEST version from Moodle
each time.
• As you work through Lesson 6 (pages 68 – 82), read the sections where the concepts are
explained before completing the exercises.
• Complete all the exercises from Lesson 6 and submit to SMark for feedback.
• Save your exercise documents in your S:\module-code\Weekly Tasks\Week 04 Word folder

explained before completing the exercises.
• Complete all the exercises from Lesson 7 and submit to SMark for feedback.
• Save your exercise documents in your S:\module-code\Weekly Tasks\Week 04 Word folder
created above.

5. Learning how to Type FASTER (Highly Recommended)

The complete set of instructions for the typing tutor may be found in the A03 How to use the Typing
Tutor.pdf file from the Additional Materials folder in the Module Documents block in iLearn Moodle
– see W02 Application Guide.
Some tips:
• Pay attention to the first screen shown when you open TIPP10 – you are shown there where
your fingers need to go, to learn how to touch-type.
• There are 20 lessons in total and your progress through the lessons will be stored
automatically.
• Before you start, check how to change the settings for where the record of your progress is
stored – if you set this right, every time you do something, it will be added to the list of what
you did before – suggested location is the root of your S:\module-code\Weekly Tasks
folder.
• When you want to see your results, in the menu bar select Go and then click on Results.
For this week, we recommend that you do Lessons 6 & 10 for a minimum of 2 minutes each day
– even if it goes very slowly to start with, when you use the correct fingers. Work through these at
least once a day, to help you get quicker faster!
