He highlighted the TBI’s potential to attract private sector
involvement, contributing to the ambitious goal of securing
trillions of Dollars annually to address the Climate Emer-
gency.
Not stopping with these laudable initiatives, the President
also took the lead to launch a Climate Justice Forum (CJF)
in association with the United Nations Environment Pro-
gramme (UNEP). The formal establishment is likely to be at
the UN Climate Summit next year.
Although there is already a Loss and Damages Fund (LDF)
for compensating or otherwise providing funds for poorer
countries affected by Climate Change, the CJF is likely to
be a more inclusive mechanism for funding climate actions.
With Sri Lanka alone needing around US$ 100 billion for
climate actions, one can perceive the scale of funding
needed to avert a climate disaster in the next few decades.
Ironically, if even a fraction of the global annual defence
budget of US$ 2.2 trillion can be diverted towards address-
ing Climate Change, the world will be a much better place.
It is also time to end our reliance on fossil fuel as much as
possible. Sri Lanka is already planning to start six Renew-
able Energy (RE) projects next year, with the aim of gener-
ating 70 percent of the total electricity demand from RE by
2030. Once car imports begin sometime next year after a
four-year ban, only Battery Electric (BEV) and Hydrogen
Fuel Cell (HFC) cars should be permitted to be imported to
the country. More individuals and commercial entities
should also be encouraged to go for solar power, with
Photo Voltaic (PV) panels getting cheaper and more effi-
cient by the day. Climate action needs more such practical
solutions to usher in a better world.
