Case Study 1

Leo is working in a supermarket and is assigned to the meat section of the

store. He regularly works inside the cold storage area with a fixed number of
hours. Unfortunately, the store does not provide him with the appropriate
apparel such as jackets and boots to protect him from a very cold working
environment.

1. What are the possible occupational hazard Leo is faced with?

 Cold storage is one of the main links in modern industrial processes,

especially in the strategic food sector. They are necessary to ensure the
viability and competitiveness of all businesses that deal with perishable
goods, such as meat, fish, vegetables, etc. Based on the given
situation ,Leo may become unwell because prolonged exposure in a cold
environment or storage areas without wearing any suitable protective
clothing can increase the risk of cold-related illnesses, such as flu,
bronchitis, and influenza. Additionally,it may result in discomfort ,a loss in
the physical and manual ability to do the tasks and a feeling of numbness
in the hands, feet, cheeks, nose and ears.

2. What are the responsibilities of the store owner in case Leo gets
injured while performing his work?

 In case Leo gets injured while performing his work, the owner's
responsibilities are to get Leo to a safe place , assess the situation, assist
the injured, and gather information. Every business that employs staff is
responsible for their health and safety while they are working. Whether
this is in the workplace or out on site, the owner should take the
necessary steps to ensure that you are working in a safe environment.
Additionally,in order to avoid or minimise the risk of injury, owners should
continually assess the working environment of their staff and consider
what practical steps can be taken to further prevent any accidents. By
making safety a priority, establishing a relationship with a medical
provider, and planning ahead for transitional modified jobs, owners will be
positioned to effectively and efficiently handle a work-related injury should
one occur.
