Persecutions of Followers

Slaves
 Hadrat Bilal was beaten with sticks and lashes. He was exposed
to the burning sands and heavy stones were placed on him.
Sometimes they tied a rope around his neck and he was
dragged through the streets.
 Abu Fukaih was the slave of Safwan b. Umayya. He was
tortured like Bilal. He migrated to Medina but died before the
battle of Badr.
 Lubaynah was a female slave. Umar bin al-Khattab tortured
her, and whenever he paused, he said: “I have not stopped
beating you out of pity. I have stopped because I am
exhausted.” He resumed beating her after he had rested.

 Zunayra was another female slave. When she declared her faith in
Islam, Umar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu Jahl, took turns in torturing her
until she became blind.
 Nahdiyya and Umm Unays were two other female slaves who became
Muslims. Their masters tortured them for accepting Islam. Abu Bakr
bought all these slaves and gave them their freedom.
Poor Companions
 Khabab b. Al-Arat was a young blacksmith of twenty when he
accepted Islam. He was forced to lie on the burning coals and
not allowed to move until his back was totally burnt.
 Suhaib b. Sinan had been captured and was sold as a slave by
the Greeks. When he became a Muslim, the Quraysh beat him
up savagely but could not shake his faith.

 Ammar b. Yasir and his parents. His parents were killed before
him but he couldn’t do anything. His mother was the first
woman martyr.
 Abdullah ibn Masood, a young Muslim. He recited Surah
Rahman loudly and was beaten by Quraysh.
 Harith b. Abi Hala, the nephew and the adopted son of
Khadija, entered the melee to defend the Messenger of God
from the violence of the polytheists of Makkah.One of the
idolaters drew his dagger, and stabbed him repeatedly. He was
the first Muslim to be killed.
 Abu Dharr went into the Kaaba, and shouted:“There is no God
but Allah; and Muhammad is his Messenger.” As expected, the
infidels fell upon him, and started raining blows upon him.

Rich Followers
 Hadrat Uthman was the first person to accept Islam from Banu
Umayyah. His uncle Hakam tortured him. He was locked in
the room and not given any food or drink until he fainted.
Sometimes he was rolled in a mat and fire was lit around him
for suffocation.
 Hadrat Musa’b b. Umair was known as the prince of Makkah.
When he accepted Islam he was expelled from his house and
suffered too much for Islam but remained firm.
 Once Hadrat Abu Bakr and Talha were tied together with
ropes and beaten but their tribesmen didn’t help them, instead
they disowned them due to their change of religion.
 Talha was beaten by his mother and tribesmen on his
conversion.
