2024 Swahabas- Bilal ibn Rabah (RA)

• Bilal ibn Rabah (RA) was a slave whose master was Ummayyah Bin Khalaf, he
used to torture Bilal (RA). One day Bilal ibn Rabah (RA) heard about Islam and
embraced it, after Ummayyah tortured him more cruelly and horribly.

• Ummayyah used the tie Bilal (RA) with ropes or chains, put huge stones on his
chest and drag him through the horrible sweltering hot desert. They used to tell
him to stop saying that Allah (SWT) was one, they did not care if he was Muslim.
But Bilal (RA) still continued.

• One day while they were torturing Bilal ibn Rabah (RA), Abu Bakr Siddique (RA)
saw this incident and asked Ummayyah if he would release him. Ummayyah
agreed, but Abu Bakr (RA) should be willing to pay his price. The price given by
Ummayyah was so hefty and high, yet Abu Bakr (RA) accepted. From that
moment Bilal (RA) was free.

• Bilal ibn Rabah (RA) used to always spend time with the Prophet Muhammed
(SAW) and live with him. When the Prophet went to Madinah for hijra, Bilal (RA)
also accompanied him, and the person whom the Prophet (SAW) chose to call the
Adan was Bilal (RA). Therefore, the nickname of Bilal Ibn Rabah (RA) was Mua’
din Ar Rasool (‫) ُم َؤذِّن أر رسول‬.

• On the day of Makkan Fatahuath, Prophet Muhammed (SAW) chose him to call
out the Adan. It was one of the highest honors for a person, Islam shows how a
slave can also reach the highest recognition.

• Bilal (RA) also participated in the battle of Badr during the 2nd Hijra Year, during
that battle he killed Ummayyah, the very man who tortured him and put him
through so much hardships.

• After the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) had died, Bilal (RA) felt devastated and
forlorn. He could not accept the loss of the Prophet whom he had loved and
admired, in the end he went to Abu Bakr As-Siddique (RA) who was the Khalipha
at the time and asked him if he could leave Madinah because he kept on getting
remained of the Prophet. Abu Bakr (RA) agreed and Bilal bin Rabah (RA) went to
live in Syria and lived there for the rest of his life.

• Mua’ din is the person who calls out the Adan in the mosque.
