Usman Ibn Affan
Usman (RA) was chosen by the people as the next Calipha. He became
Calipha in hijra 24th year- 644 AD on Muharram 3rd.
Usman (RA) was called Dhunoorain ()ذو نورين, the possessor of two lights,
this name was given to him because he married two daughters of Prophet
Muhammed (SAW), Ruqiyya ( )رقيةand Umm Kulthum ()أم كلثوم.
He married two daughters of prophet because on the hijra 2nd year Ruqiyya
passed away, that is why Usman (RA) was allowed not to participate in the
battle of Badr.
He had participated in all battles except the battle of Badr due to Ruqiyya
(RA)’s illness.
People used to do hijra to Ethiopia in those days, Najaash was the name of
the Ethiopian king. Usman (RA) suffered a lot because he embraced Islam
thus, he also migrated there.
Usman (RA) was 71 when he was elected as Calipha. Back in those days
people were mostly illiterate, Usman (Ra) was a learned man because he
knew how to read and write and the experiences he gained through his
travels as a businessman increased his knowledge.
He was a very able man. He was an orator and at the same time he
memorized the Quran and could recite it beautifully.
