Q2. Read the following passage then answer questions that follow
WHAT MAKES GOVERNMENT
Any government consists of three important parts – the executive, the legislature and the
judiciary. The legislature makes laws of the country. The executive makes the day to day
decisions and is responsible for the running of government. Finally there is the judiciary which
interprets the law. The judiciary consists of the judges and magistrates.
America has a presidential system of government. In this system the head of the state is a
President, and the legislature, executive and judiciary are independent from each other. This is
known as separation of powers.
By contrast, the UK has a parliamentary government. In this system the leader of the largest
political party in government becomes the Prime Minister who is the head of the executive.
Parliament is made up of the government – MPs of the leading political party and other parties.
Parliament is both a legislative and executive body combined.
Not all MPs support the government. Those MPs from other parties outside of the government
form the opposition. The party with the second largest number of MPs forms the official
opposition. This party’s leader is called the Leader of Opposition. The job of the opposition is to
constructively criticize and oppose the government.
