Graphical Linkage Synthesis

The synthesis of the mechanism is to design a mechanism to produce the desired output
motion for a given input.

In terms of synthesis application, mechanism design divides itself into the following
three parts.

Type Synthesis: Type refers to the kind of mechanism selected (best system suited for
the problem), it could be linkage, belts and pully or a geared system.

Number Synthesis: Number of links or joints required for a mechanism to obtain

desired degree of freedom.

Dimension Synthesis: the proportions or lengths of the links necessary to satisfy the
required motion of a mechanism.

Classification of synthesis problem

Function Generation: Frequent requirement is that of causing output link to rotate,

oscillate or reciprocate according to the specified function of input motion. So, it’s a
correlation of an input motion with an output motion in a mechanism. E.g Y=f(x)

In slider crank mechanism. The

output is in the form of displacement
of the slider.

Motion Generation: The control of a line in a plane such that it assumes some prescribed
set of sequential positions. i.e. one link of the given mechanism must to be guided in a
prescribed manner.

The link may or may not be coordinated with the input motion
Path Generation: Control of a point in a plane such that it follows some prescribed
path.

The prescribed path may or may not be coordinated with the input motion
