“HIDDEN FIGURES”
Movie Reviewer: John Paul Bañado, Ayessa Garcia, Leigh Ordinado and Ronel Vertudez
This story is about the three brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as
the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into space,
a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence galvanized the world. Apart from this,
hidden figures show the discrimination between White American and African America that became
hinder for the protagonist to showcase what she’s got.
In 1926 at West Virginia, there was a young African-American girl who shown to have a
preternatural affinity for Mathematics named Katherine Goble. The struggle in her life as an African-
American leads her not to do the things that she want. She was working on National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA) together with her African-American friends, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary
Jackson. All the discrimination of Whites, they take it as a challenge to show them that they can and they
are capable of working with Whites. Their race affect their personality and dignity to voice out what they
feel. After all the inhumane and harshness of White people, after fighting for their rights as a human, as a
colored people, the three became blessed and successful on their career. Mary Jackson who fight for her
rights to study wherein only whites are allowed became America’s first female African Aeronautical
engineer and was appointed Langley’s Women’s Manager where she fought to advance women of all
colors. Dorothy who discriminate the capability and skills of her girls in Langley and did accept her
promotion became the first African-American Supervisor and on the Frontier of electronic computing and
she was regarded as one of the most brilliant mind at NASA. John Glenn an American Astronaut was
send in space safely just because of intelligence and brilliant mind of Katherine Goble. After all the
insulting words, discrimination, they are still believing that they can and no matter how they treat them,
It is just a challenge. They stand still to show off that they can.
There are cultures present in the movie which affect the communication of main characters. First
one is, the gender role, it shows in the scenario where Katherine wants to attend the briefings in NASA
but ladies are not allowed to come, she has lot of things to say and to explain but she always neglected by
the head. Second, by their race because they are African-American, they used to look by the whites and
ignored them every time they have complaints. And lastly, discrimination when it comes on comfort
rooms, the white comfort rooms and coloreds are separated that’s why every day when Katherine was
about to go to comfort room she ran from NASA’s office to Langley just to pee. All of those hinder the
protagonist to communicate, although they have lot of things to say, express what she wants to express
and do what she wants to do, she cannot. The culture and the settings hinder all of her creativity.
People who would watch this kind of movies are those who experienced being discriminated in
their life, work or in their talents. Those people who suffered from being not appreciated because of their
races. One example of this situation is our native people, most of the time we gave them stereotyping that
they can cannot do what most of the people can do just because they have different ways of living or
tradition. The reviewer rate this movie as PG for the thematic elements and language. Hidden figures give
us knowledge and awareness of how people have been discriminated because of their race. We learned
that everybody has a right to equal opportunity and it deserve 10/10 because it taught us to prevent
discrimination and equality at all aspect of life.
