Water: the race against time
Of all our planet’s resources, water is arguably the most essential, but it is also the one that
is most under threat. The world’s food supply depends on it: indeed, agriculture accounts for
72% of all freshwater withdrawals. In future, water conservation, recycling, the conversion of
wastewater into drinking water, and desalination all have a part to play in delivering solutions
to a parched world. In each of these solutions, stainless steel plays a role.

Benefits of diffusion bonding & SAM
Diffusion bonding offers substantial
benefits to various industries, such as
the ability to bond dissimilar metals
and high-value alloys. The technology
also enables advantageous applications
for conformal cooling used in injection
moulding and die casting.
The importance of designing a dissimilar
metal joint often lies in a desire to expose
the correct metal surface to specific
environmental conditions where a single
alloy may not perform as well. Another
reason is to introduce material systems
that are lighter in weight or provide a
level of corrosion resistance that can only
be achieved by “packaging” dissimilar
metals.

3 news grades under IS 15997 ANDRITZ contract for Jaguara modernisation

ENGIE Brasil Energia awarded ANDRITZ a contract for
the modernization of the Brazilian Jaguara hydropower
plant. Located in Rifaina, State of Sao Paulo, the 424
MW hydropower plant is an important asset of ENGIE’s
hydro generation fleet. The project is expected to be
completed by the end of 2028. The ANDRITZ scope of
supply includes the modernization of the four Francis
turbine generator units with a capacity of 106 MW each,
governors, the excitation system, the automation system,
and all related auxiliary systems. The contract will be
executed by ANDRITZ Hydro Brazil. The project aims
at the extension of asset lifetime and its performance
improvement.

The Bureau of Indian Standards has recently introduced three Vallourec line pipes phases 6 and 8 of Buzios
grades—N5, N6, and N7—under the standard IS 15997, meant
exclusively for stainless steel used in utensils and kitchenware
applications. Jindal Stainless is the first to apply for and secure
certification for those grades under the enhanced standard.
The enhancement in the scope of the standard brings in
low Nickel (with Ni <1%) Chromium Manganese grades of
stainless steel within the ambit of BIS specifications. The
addition of these three grades to the standard will help usher
in a new quality regime for stainless steel used in utensils and
kitchenware.
