Stami Green Ammonia enables environmentally friendly

Ravenna plant to be decarbonised ammonia production by deriving nitrogen from the air and
using hydrogen obtained by water electrolysis instead of the
steam reforming of fossil fuels. As a result, this technology
offers a sustainable and highly competitive alternative to
conventional gray processes, paving the way for producing
green fertilisers from renewable energy sources.
Urea industry processes take place at high temperatures
and pressure, and ammonium carbamate is highly corrosive.
Therefore, the high-pressure (HP) synthesis equipment
and parts have to be manufactured from strong, light and
corrosion-resistant materials. The solution is Safurex®, a
super duplex stainless steel specially designed to eliminate
corrosion in fertiliser plants.

MAIRE announced that NextChem and Marcegaglia Group

study to accelerate the decarbonisation of Marcegaglia’s
steel plant in Ravenna. Upon successful completion of
the feasibility study, NextChem will involve the Group’s
Integrated E&C Solutions Business Unit for the execution of
the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED).
These solutions, once implemented, have the potential to
capture approximately 285 tons per day of CO2 that would
otherwise be released into the atmosphere. NextChem will
provide a full assessment of the steel plant decarbonization
capacity and will define the technical specifications for the
carbon capture solutions.

The dash for green
electricity
The challenge of replacing Russian gas with a reliable
energy source has prompted steps forward as well as back.
Coal is making a comeback, and nuclear fission is being
re-assessed; but at the same time the transition towards
green energy is accelerating. The war in Ukraine, along with
the grim predictions of climate scientists, is driving an
energy revolution which can be seen above all in the rapid
growth of solar, wind, tidal, and geothermal energy. And
don’t let’s forget hydrogen.

Another state that is catching up in its
green energy projects is Australia,
where clean energy project approvals
have doubled under the current
administration. A clean energy plan
unveiled last September foresees USD
40 billion to convert coal-fired plants to
renewables.
In Asia, India has undergone a solar
boom that has replaced gas but left
coal use largely unaffected. The state
will invite bids for 8 GW of wind power
annually until 2030. China plans to build
a mind-blowing 450 GW of solar and
wind power in the Gobi desert.

Innovation
The green energy sector continues to
innovate. To avoid consuming too much

Overcoming intermittency
How to overcome the fact that the wind
does not always blow and the sun does
not always shine? One answer is hybrid
systems. These generate electricity from
two or more sources, usually renewable,
using a common connection point. So
when the wind blows less hard, and
the sunshine grows stronger, as often
occurs in summer, one can switch from
wind to solar. Such systems are often
stand-alone and come with storage or
conversion to hydrogen (see below).

CO2
Fortunately, other solutions exist.
One, surprisingly enough, involves
CO2! Energy Dome has developed a
technology based on a thermodynamic
transformation of CO2 in a closed-loop
process, essentially a thermomechanical
process. Using excess green energy,
CO2 gas is compressed, stored, and
liquefied. When the energy is required,
it is evaporated and expanded, driving
a turbine. The compressors, turbines
and heat exchangers are very similar to
what is used in the oil & gas industry.

New mindset required

Designing effectively for additive
manufacturing requires a significant
change in mindset, explains Warwick.
“You must design for the best function
achievable for an item, then choose the
manufacturing technique based on that.
Traditionally, fabricators took a piece
of metal, drilled holes where needed,
and machined it to finish it. AM creates
an entirely new way of looking at the
functionality of the components. You
need to focus on what you are trying to
achieve.”
“A classic example is a valve block,

“Our strategy is to constantly improve
and help our clients, many of whom
choose us because of our focus on
quality, which largely stems from our
R&D roots.”
Another attraction for clients is RAM3D’s
competitive prices, due partly to the
scale of production the company
engages in. “We’re now the largest
AM service provider in the Southern
Hemisphere, based on information from
the last Wholers report.”
A mindset focusing on the functionality of components is required; a traditional valve

Because the RAM3D team come from an
R&D background, the company culture is
one of care and quality.
“We carry out extensive testing in-
house and have one of the world’s
largest databases of tensile results for
metal additive manufactured parts,”
explains Warwick. “Several universities
have tried to buy it; however, it’s solely
for in-house use. The data allows us to
align very minor changes in the data
with variations within the process.
We’re always looking for improvements,
and none of our machines operate as

Stainless steels in methanol production

Stainless steels play a vital role in methanol
production plants due to their unique combination
of properties, including corrosion resistance,
strength, and thermal stability.

One of the primary uses of stainless in methanol

production plants is for reactors and process
vessels. Methanol production involves high-
pressure reactions and the handling of corrosive
chemicals and gases, such as synthesis gas (a
mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and
carbon dioxide). Stainless steels, particularly
those with high chromium and nickel content,
exhibit excellent resistance to corrosion and
chemical attack, ensuring the integrity and
longevity of the reactors and vessels.

Stainless steels are also employed in piping systems within methanol plants. These systems transport feedstock gases,
catalysts, and methanol throughout the facility. Stainless pipes and fittings provide reliable and durable conduits, capable of
withstanding the high pressures, temperatures, and corrosive fluids involved in the methanol production process.

Stainless steels are also used in heat exchangers and condensers within methanol plants. These components are responsible
for efficient heat transfer and cooling during various stages of the process.

STATS sign supply agreement with EPOMS The Swedish patent covers the core technology that
enables Stilfold to design and build sophisticated products
using origami-inspired curve folding. It includes the
company’s proprietary computer-guided software (called
STILWARE) which enables designers to create folding
instructions for flat materials and turn them into three-
dimensional shapes.
The idea behind Stilfold is to design and manufacture
products that combine functionality, durability and
sustainability, enabling designers to use fewer raw materials
and components without sacrificing design complexity.
Eventually, the Stilfold technology will be made available to
designers, architects, manufacturers and engineers who want
to licence it to build their own products whilst minimising their
environmental impact.

STATS Group has signed an exclusive supply agreement for its Automated 3D technology for casting
products and services with Malaysia’s E&P O&M Services Sdn
Bhd (EPOMS).
EPOMS provides integrated frontline operations and
maintenance services for oil and gas platforms, floating
facilities, associated flowlines and pipelines in Malaysia.
The strategic agreement covers STATS’ innovative range of
pipeline hot tapping, plugging and inline isolation services,
including its market-leading BISEP double block and bleed
technology and Remote Tecno Plug system.

New patent for ‘industrial origami’

The casting industry faces many challenges when

machining blanks of cast and forged parts so that the
parts meet customer requirements. To ensure the highest
quality, the parts must be subjected to regular testing and
inspection.
With optical portable or automated 3D metrology solutions,
foundries and casting manufacturers get a fast, portable,
accurate and versatile instrument for measuring, testing
and validating cast parts during the iterative processes
of product development, as well as quality control and
maintenance.
With the portable 3D scanners Go!SCAN SPARK, HandySCAN
BLACK and MetraSCAN BLACK and the 3D measurement
software platform VXelements, Creaform provides a complete
tool for precise measurements directly in the production
environment.
