This year, unmanned test flights will be launched. By 1967, manned Apollo flights should be orbiting around the earth, and by 1970 around the moon. The moon is not the major objective, how- ever. It is a goal which serves mainly to pro vide the focus and direction for the develop. ment of space capabilities. Plans for mis sions after the 1970 moon landing are being designed now. There are many possible projects. They include services such as weather information, global watch on. ship and air traffic, and air sea rescues. More important from the stand- point of gaining new knowledge is the en. visioned orbiting laboratories for physical and biological work and the observatories for astronomical research. For the moon trip, though, the Apollo sys: tem will perform a useful function. It will be the astronauts’ base for extended explor- ation .of the lunar surface. Basically, the Apollo system has three parts. First is the three-man command module, a cone-shaped craft in which the astronauts ride and return to earth. This capsule is at- tached to a service module, the second part, ich carries equipment, power supplies, and a restartable rocket motor and fuel. This motor will be used for maneuvering in space. On the moon mission, it will put the astronauts into a lunar orbit and direct them to earth when they wish to return. It will be léft behind before reentry into the earth's atmosphere. The third part of the Apollo system is the lunar excursion module (LEM), a special two- man space craft in which the astronauts will leave the main capsule and maneuver them: selves to the lunar surface. When their mis: sion is complete, they will return in LEM to the orbiting mother ship, as it circles the moon, LEM has two parts: the two-man cab, and the four-legged base housing the engines. When: the astronauts have completed their mission on the moon, they will climb back into LEM’s cab and use the base as a launch- ing pad to rejoin the Apollo ship. The base will remain on the lunar surface and con- tinue to send scientific data back to earth. LEM also has the capability of carrying supplies from the spaceship to the moon, for setting up a base camp. It could place 7,000 pounds of materials on the moon in this manner. At the manned spacecraft center in Hous. ton, Texas, a version of LEM already stands on a simulated moonscape. The ingenuity of engineers has molded volcanic rock and blast furnace slag into a five-acre model of the moon's surface. Perched on the edge of one of the three man:made craters is LEM The astronauts come here regularly for in- struction and to gain some idea of what lunar exploration will be like. There are only three things wrong with the pseudo-moonscape. The engineers were unable to remove the earth's atmosphere and gravity, and they found it impossible to duplicate the extreme temperatures of the real moon, But other than that, this earthly bit of lunar landscape looks genuine enough to deceive the best geologists. The Apollo system, combined with the powerful Saturn rockets, will be able to boost three men into an earth orbit for two or three months, or into a lunar orbit for twenty-eight days. From there, exploration of the moon is only a step away. Such promised spectacular achievements are staggering to the imagination, but they are only a prelude to the possibilities of deep: er exploration into the farthest reaches of interplanetary space! JOHNNY CHAVEY of Harlingen, Texas is one of many readers who have written to ask if they could buy past issues of Space Family Robinson. Unfortunately, we do not have extra copies. We hope that you can find the issues you want among friends es might have bought extra copies and have saved them. BROOKS MILLSAP of Pompano Beach, Florida suggests that the Space Station he equipped with weapons so the Robinsons can defend themselves if attacked. The Space Station was built as a flying scientific Jaber cases naLSEbpes, Net as thought of it becoming lost in space and having 0 defend itself was not contemplated. The Rob insons do, however, have small hand weapons aboard. DAVE KNIGHT of Fairport, New York would like to know more about the rooms and com partments in the Space Station. Much of the story in this issue takes place in the Space Station. Perhaps it shows rooms that you have not seen before. In juture issues we will ‘attempt to show various sections that, as yet. have not been seen. JOHNNY MAYFIELD of Rock Hill, ina wants to know what took place episode of Captain Venture. th Caro. n the first Captain Venture’s space ship from Earth was struck by a meteorite and plunged below the surface of a water-covered planet in outer spar The ship emerged in an underground cavern its radio ruined. Captain Venture and his engi neer, Scotty Mackay, then set out to find Quin- trillium wire to repair the radio so that they might contact Earth and report that they were alive, : PHILIP REYNOLDS o} » Park, Llinvis wonders if the adventures of Space Family Rob: inson. and Magnus, Robot Fighter take place in the same period in the future and if so. will they ever he in a story together. SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON stories take place shortly after the year 2000. MAGNUS, ROBOT FIGHTER is set in the year 4000. So it isn't likely they, will ever get together unless one of them steps into a time machine. TED CHILA of Montoursville, Pennsylvania is interested in knowing if the Space Station was built on Earth or in-space. Space Station #1 was built on Earth ajter years of compiling information on rocket probes and orbiting satellites. Discovering how to harness and use magnetic enerey for the power system in the 1990's enabled the engineers to fulfill their dream of making a space station laboratory that had maneuverability and could cruise indef. nitely. It was, of course, built with infinite care for the comfort and safety oj its inhabitants, the Robinsons —Earth’s first family to live in space. ‘Thanks, also, for letters from the followin BILLY UHOR—Mt. To the ancient Chinese goes the credit of discovering gunpowder, and its subsequent application to rockets, which were used for war purposes as long ago as 1225 A.D. During the War of 1812, the British used roc kets in their attempt to capture Fort McHenry. This was immortalized by Francis Scott Key in “The Star Spangled Bannel Rocket development has made fantastic pro- gress during the mid-twentieth century, with Mmanned-orbital flights and photographic mis- sions to the Moon and Mars. Travelers to the East brought the rocket back to Europe, where it was quickly put to_use. The people of Ghent, Belgium, in 1314, defended their town against pirates. Modern rocketry started with the work of Dr. Robert H. Goddard during World War |. A number of Goddard's patents were later used by the Germans in the V-2 rockets. The future of rockets seems as limitless as space itself.
