From the Editor
With the strength that God`s Spirit gives us, which we just celebrated at Pentecost, and the daily presence oI Je-
sus in the Eucharist, we place into your hands once again the news bulletin, Nuntia, its June issue. In it are pre-
sented the most relevant activities oI the Superior General and the General Council, as well as the memory oI
two notable persons Ior the Vincentian Family: Nicholas Van KleeI and the newly Blessed Sister Marguerite Ru-
tan.
May the strength and the grace oI the Spirit continue guiding the Congregation and the entire Vincentian Family
in order that we may continue being witnesses oI his love in the world.
From the General Curia
The Superior General and the General Council
On 4 June, the New Commission Ior the Revision and
Renewal oI the Ratio Formationis met in the General
Curia under Stanislav Zontak`s direction. They were
received by the Superior General and worked at coordi-
nation in order to plan the activities to continue in this
process. The Ratio has not been revised in the last 25
years.

Also on 4 June, the Superior General had a virtual meet-
ing with the New Commission that is looking Ior the
way to deepen the Iormation oI Vincentian leaders. On
5 June, he had a virtual meeting with JMV`s Interna-
tional Council.
From the 6
th
to the 10
th
, there was a Tempo Forte meet-
ing in the General Curia. On 11 June, the General
Council had a special session where the main topic was
the carrying out oI canonical visitations. This took
place at the Ethiopian College. AIter the session there
was the opportunity to share with the members oI the
College community, which, as we know, is run by two
conIreres, Teclezghi Bahta and Memheru Mekonnen
Menkir.

On 12 June, the Superior General took part in the
graduation oI the students oI Saint John`s University at
its Roman Campus.

On 13 June, together with Zeracristos YosieI, he had a
meeting with those responsible Ior the Oriental Church,
carried out in the Ethiopian College. That evening,
there was a special send-oII dinner Ior Mario Grossi,
who completes his service as Superior oI the General
Curia House in the Iirst week oI July.
On 14 June, he received Antoine Pierre Nakad,
Visitor oI the Province oI the Orient. On the 15

,
he received the bishop oI the new mission Moun-
dou Diocese in Chad, Monsignor Joachim
Kouraleyo Tarounga.

On 16 June, he had a virtual meeting with the Di-
rector oI the Vincentian Solidarity OIIice, Miles
Heinen.

From the 18
th
to the 20
th
, he took part in the diIIer-
ent activities surrounding the beatiIication oI Sister
Marguerite Rutan together with other members oI
the General Curia and thousands oI members oI the
various branches oI the Vincentian Family.

On the 26
th
, he participated in the Sending-on-
Mission Mass oI a young sister Irom the Province
oI Siena, Maria Magdalena. The sister is Irom In-
donesia, but grew up in Holland.
On 27 June, he had a virtual meeting with the par-
ticipants oI the CIF program at which he shared
with them on the topic oI leadership.

Przeoonego Generalnego i pracowali nad koordynacj
dziaa w celu zaplanowania kolejnych krokw realizacji
procesu rewizji i odnowy. Ratio nie byo weryfikowane
przez ostatnie 25 lat.
Rwnie 4 czerwca, Przeoony Generalny odby
wirtualn konferencj z now Komisj, ktrej celem jest
poszukiwanie sposobw pogbienia formacji liderw
Wincentyskich. 5 czerwca przeprowadzi wirtualne
spotkanie z Rad Midzynarodow JMV.
Posiedzenie Tempo Forte miao miejsce w Kurii
Generalnej od 6 do 10 czerwca. 11 czerwca Rada
Generalna zebraa si na specjalnej sesji na temat
przeprowadzania wizytacji kanonicznych. Jej miejscem
byo Kolegium Etiopskie. Po zebraniu zaistniaa
moliwo wymiany zda z czonkami Kolegium, ktre
jak wiadomo, jest prowadzone przez dwch Konfratrw -

tego samego dnia przygotowano poegnaln kolacj dla
ks. Mario Grossiego, ktry w pierwszym tygodniu lipca
koczy swoj posug Superiora Domu Generalnego.

Blessed will they be
Memory of the Assassination of our Confrere, Nicholas Van Kleef (Nico)
On the morning oI 7 May 1989, the day on which the presiden-
tial election was held in Panama, a Iew meters Irom Saint Mar-
tha`s Church in the Bugaba district, an agent oI the DeIense
Forces pulled the trigger Iatally injuring Van KleeI, who, be-
cause oI a traIIic accident suIIered in Veraguas, was in wheel-
chair. In spite oI that, he had actively continued his missionary
labor.
Father Nico was accustomed to traverse the village using a
loudspeaker to inIorm the people that Mass was about to begin,
but in spite oI having requested permission Irom the heads oI
the Iormer DeIense Forces in La Concepcion Ior this, a con-
Iused policeman thinking that he was calling the people to sabo-
tage the elections, and at the same time not wanting the priest to
do his work, approached the car in which he was travelling and
putting the weapon to his head did not hesitate to commit one oI
the most despicable crimes against a man whose emphasis in
liIe was on loving God and struggling Ior peace.
Chronicle of a Beatification
In Matthew`s gospel, Jesus makes it clear that the pursuit oI the
Kingdom has its risks, but also a big reward, a liIe oI constant hap-
piness. That is what happened to Marguerite Rutan. Her consistent
witness to Jesus Christ and his cause led her to give her liIe, receiv-
ing the palm oI martyrdom, but with it also Iull liIe in God. Be-
cause oI that, today we call her Blessed.

Marguerite Rutan, Daughter oI Charity oI Saint Vincent de Paul,
was martyred on 9 April 1794 in Dax, France.

Sister Rutan`s beatiIication took place in Dax, France and diIIerent
activities were carried out around this celebration, which had so
much meaning Ior the Vincentian Family. The majority oI those
who came Irom other places gathered on Friday. On that day there
was a pilgrimage to the places where Marguerite was beIore her
martyrdom, concluding with a play on Rutan`s liIe and a well enter-
tained dinner at the Berceau.
Every year, the conIreres and other associations oI the Vincentian Family, as well as parishioners oI the parishes
neighboring that oI Saint Martha, meet to celebrate the IaithIul witness oI Father Nico (as he was aIIectionately
called).

On Saturday, the 18
th
, in the morning, the partici-
pants made a pilgrimage to Lourdes, where the
Eucharist was celebrated Ior the BeatiIication, pre-
sided by Cardinal Angelo Amato and concelebrated
by the conIreres who were there Ior the Iestivity.


In the evening there was Thanksgiving Vigil in the
Cathedral oI Dax, where the Bishop oI Dax, Cardi-
nal Amato, diIIerent members oI the Vincentian
Family, and local parishioners were present.
On Sunday, the 19
th
, there was a pilgrimage to the Sanctu-
ary oI Our Lady oI Buglose.

In the aIternoon, it was the great celebration oI Sister Mar-
guerite`s BeatiIication in Dax`s Arena. The PreIect oI the
Congregation Ior the Causes oI the Saints, Cardinal An-
gelo Amato, presided at the celebration. About six thou-
sand people gathered.

tion was done by Gianluigi Marzo, a young priest oI
Saint Sophia`s Parish in Corsano, Province oI Lecce
(Italy). We thank Father Gianluigi Ior his great ar-
tistic contribution to this celebration. May the Iorce
oI the Spirit continue strengthening him in his minis-
try and increase his giIts.

, in the morning, the Iirst Eucha-
rist Ior the newly Blessed was held. It was presided
by the Bishop oI Dax, Monsignor Philippe Breton.

An archival document announced that, in December 1793, a delegation oI
the Company oI Dax`s popular commune presented a claim beIore the
monitoring committee against the superior oI Dax`s hospital, giving several
accusations in opposition to the renewed law. Immediately aIter the com-
plaint, the committee considered that the accused merited prison, the arrest
warrant was established, in such a way that at the end oI the year, it would
be communicated to the representatives oI the people, the department, the
district board, the municipality, and the popular commune.

On 3 March 1794, 11 other Daughters oI Charity Irom the hos-
pital also were imprisoned because they were indicated as aris-
tocrats, Ianatics, and superstitious persons. When Sister Mar-
guerite was in jail, she was accused by a soldier who presented
against her other charges in violation oI the law. She was sub-
mitted to a Iirst interrogation on 15 January 1794.
Sister Marguerite was put in jail on 24 December 1793, together
with 54 other women in the Carmelite convent, which had been
transIormed into a women`s jail, whereas the men were de-
tained in the Iormer Capuchin monastery.

Bezzwocznie po zoeniu skargi, Komisja uznaa oskarona zasuya na
wizienie, wydano nakaz aresztowania w taki sposb, e do koca roku
decyzja powinna zosta przekazana przedstawicielom narodu, departamentu,
radzie okrgu, wadzom miasta i komunie ludowej.
Siostra Magorzata zostaa uwiziona 24 grudnia 1793 w
konwencie karmelitw, ktry zamieniono w wizienie dla kobiet,
podczas gdy mczyzn osadzano w byym klasztorze
kapucynw.
3 marca 1794, 11 kolejnych Sistr Miosierdzia ze szpitala
rwnie uwiziono poniewa wskazano je jako arystokratki,
fanatyczki, i osoby przesdne. Bdc w wizieniu onierz
oskary Siostr Magorzat przedstawiajc kolejne zarzuty o
naruszenia prawa. Na pierwsze przesuchanie zostaa
doprowadzona 15 stycznia 1794 r.

Sister Rutan was kept in total isolation in the jail and was sub-
mitted to a type oI judicial interrogation, at which she was not
allowed to deIend herselI Irom the accusations. At the end oI
the interrogation the judges issued the sentence, which was
carried out the same day. It was 9 April 1794.

May the example oI men and women like Sister Mar-
guerite continue to inspire the Vincentian Family today
Ior a greater commitment with Jesus Christ in the poor.
She was buried in one oI the ditches, which were excavated Irom one
day to the next, in an area adjacent to the Iormer Capuchin convent due
to the great number oI those condemned to the guillotine
On 28 March 1794, a search oI her cell was ordered and car-
ried out, where they Iound pamphlets and articles, which, in
the opinion oI the revolutionaries, were prooI oI her anti-
republican and uncivil spirit, and her participation against the
revolution.
Sister Marguerite was chained with her hands behind her back together
with a priest. They went as one in a wagon passing through the city
streets as Iar as the square where the guillotine had been set up. There
were many witnesses to these deaths. The priest was executed Iirst and
then the sister.

28 marca 1794 zarzdzono i przeprowadzono przeszukanie jej
celi, w ktrej znaleziono pamflety i artykuy w opinii rewolu-
cjonistw stanowice dowd na jej antyrepublikaskiego i
nieobywatelskiego ducha oraz udzia w spisku przeciw rewolucji.
Siostra Rutan bya przetrzymywana w wizieniu w cakowitej
izolacji i poddana przesuchaniu sdowemu w taki sposb, e nie
miaa moliwoci sama broni si przed oskareniami. Na koniec
przesuchania sdziowie wydali wyrok, ktry wykonano w tym
samym dniu. Byo to 9 kwietnia 1794 r.
Siostra Magorzata zostaa przykuta acuchami z rkoma na plecach
razem z ksidzem. Oboje przewieziono poczonych na wozie
poruszajcym si ulicami miasta a do placu, na ktrym bya ustawiona
gilotyna. Wielu wiadkw uczestniczyo w egzekucjach. Kapan zosta
city pierwszy, a po nim Siostra.
Zostaa pochowana w jednym z roww wykopywanych z dnia na dzie
w okolicy byego klasztoru kapucynw ze wzgldu na wielk liczb
skazanych na gilotyn.
