Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy has been shaped by my experiences within the classroom and I

now feel that a constructivist approach would be more proactive in the classroom. From my

understanding, constructivist classrooms are student-centered, with teachers focusing on

students’ questions and interests. Teachers will build on students’ prior knowledge, promote

interactive learning, and emphasize collaboration. This approach comes from my experience in

the classroom and it best aligns with how I want to teach students.

As a future educator, I aim to demonstrate concepts for and with students rather than rely

solely on lectures. Each lesson that I craft will include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic

modalities that respond to all students’ learning styles, which in turn, will help them gain a better

understanding of the content. I will also utilize project-based learning, as it will provide students

with real-world relevance. This mindset also applies to actively encouraging independent critical

thinking and self-learning. Lastly, I want to allow students to work in groups or with a partner

when it is permitted. I like the concept of group work since students can learn through one-on-

one peer interaction and/or group discussion.

I want to foster a positive classroom environment that not only promotes inclusion and

representation, but also exhibits effective classroom management. I believe it is crucial to

implement model behavior in the classroom, whether this means helping others, showing respect

towards others or staying on task. I will make my classroom rules well-defined and consistent. I

also recognize the importance in building relationships with my students, which can also help me

determine their individual learning styles and needs. By developing relationships with students, it

also allows me to prompt students to share their own cultural experiences, as I want to model

curiosity, understanding and acceptability towards backgrounds for students.
