UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, WINNEBA FACULTY OF SCIENCE NAME : ADDAI JOB 508011006 MATHEMATICS EDUCATION TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Philosophy, according

to the Word web dictionary, is any personal belief about how to live or how to deal with a situation. In other words, it is a guiding principle which directs ones activities. Teaching philosophy is therefore the principles that direct a persons way of teaching in the classroom. As a mathematics teacher, guiding students to discover principles, concepts, skills and ideas for themselves is my teaching philosophy. This means that I believe in guided discovery as a means of getting my students involved in the learning situation. Every student is loaded with a lot of potentialities and creative abilities. It is the duty of the teacher to guide students to unearth these potentials and creative abilities within them to become useful to them and also to the society at large. These beliefs and values have been my guiding principle in my teaching career. To achieve this belief, I try to use the students relevant previous knowledge to link the new learning situation in order to sustain their interest and also motivate them during the discovering processes. I also implemented my teaching philosophy during the internship with the use of discussion, teaching and learning materials, assignments and exercises to make the lessons student-centered. I created a very conducive atmosphere in the classroom for students to freely ask questions, contribute and also interact with their colleagues. In order to sustain my students interests, remedial teachings were sometimes done with those who are having difficulties grasping concepts or skills to help them continue with the discovery process. More examples in the form of class work and exercise were also given to students to practice. This teaching philosophy has given me a very great help in my teaching career.
