PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

Teaching is a process of imparting knowledge, skills and values into a learner or

student.

Philosophy also could be understood as one's view, theoretical belief or opinion

about

particular work or artefact (an object made by human/ typically cultural or

historical). Teaching philosophy therefore could be understood depending on the
previous explanation as one of the personal belief or opinion about teaching and
learning and how well it could be implemented to enhance effective teaching and
learning. There are numerous philosophies of teaching but its efficiency depends
on the holder of the philosophy.

STATEMENT OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

As a teacher who understands the concept of teaching and learning, my Philosophy

is that teaching should be Learner Centered (Jean Jacque Rousseau and John

1
Dewey) because students are not empty vessels or none of them is tabula rasa to
which teachers pour well-organized information but they are members of the
learning team where the teacher is a coach. For me, the ideal classroom
environment is learner centered. I strive to create different learning scenarios
where by learners undertake group projects while I move between groups
facilitating discussion.

VALIDITY OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I hold the philosophy that teaching should be learner-centered. With this belief, the
teacher engages students in activities including questioning and discussion. This
creates a safe environment that is interactive and collaborative which promotes
problem solving and critical thinking skills. With regard to this, Iearner feel part of
the learning process. The room for contribution also builds their confidence level
and shapes their communication skills. My philosophy yields a satisfactory
intended result most often. Due to this, I am of much optimistic that my philosophy
is valid.

APPLICATION OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My philosophy is always applied in my lesson delivery. In applying it, I introduce

the new lesson by way of activating student's previous knowledge. Ideas are sought
from learners in the introduction through questioning. This may be practical
information from their daily lives or anything that is required as a prior condition
for something else to happen or exist to enhance the understanding of the new
lesson. Through discussion method, the new topic is brought out to enhance critical
thinking which is a merit of this philosophy, I give learners’ the room to construct
their own definitions based on their understanding in the introduction. In the

2
presentation of the lesson, methods like discussion, questioning and answering are
used depending on which one is suitable. I also use questioning to detect the level
of understanding of the students in the conclusion stage. With the application of
this philosophy, the level of understanding of the learners is often encouraging

EFFECTIVENESS OF MY TEACHING PHLOSOPHY

The effectiveness of my teaching philosophy is undoubtedly high. This is because

the application of my philosophy usually helps attain the stated objectives of a
lesson. Since students are actively involved in the teaching and learning process, it
embraces easy comprehension of the content. Students develop critical thinking
skills, good communication skills, tolerance of the views of others, self-confidence
and also feel highly recognized in the learning process

CONCLUSION

The philosophy I incorporated in my lesson delivery proved to me that active

involvement of students enhances effective lesson delivery. For the benefit of our
students I urge all members of the noble teaching profession to

apply my philosophy in their teaching.

TIHANK YOU.
