Lesson 2
Patriarchal Period
Welcome back to our lesson! Let us continue to study about the Patriarchal Period. After
Abraham succeeded from the test given by God unto him, Isaac had been groomed to become
the second patriarch of the clan. So let us continue to know the different incidents happened in
the life of Isaac.

Part 2: ISAAC – THE SECOND PATRIARCH

Genesis 24:1—67

Well how was Isaac as the second patriarch of the Chosen People of
God? How was he as the father of the twin brothers whom one from
them would inherit his descendancy? Keep on reading about his
performance and react on the way he tackled the problems of his sons.

1) How did Abraham prepare a wife for Isaac?

As Abraham was too old already, he sent his eldest servant to his kindred to look for a wife
for Isaac. He called his oldest servant in his house and made him swear by putting his hand
under his thigh in the name of the Lord of heaven and earth as he charged him to take a
wife for his son in the country of his kindred or relatives but not to take a wife from the
daughters of the Canaanites. The servant asked, “If the lady would not go with him, will he
take Isaac there?” Abraham told him not to take Isaac there and that he will be freed from
the oath.
On his way to Mesopotamia to the city of Nahor (Abrahams’ brother), at evening time he
made kneel of his camels to drink on a spring; as he was standing by, he prayed unto the
Lord that to the maiden whom he will ask to let down her jar and give him drink and will
water his camels be the sign that God has appointed her to be the wife of Isaac.

2) What was the origin/family of Rebekah? Describe her.

The daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milkah, the wife of Nahor. (The granddaughter of
Nahor) Rebekah was very fair to look upon; a virgin whom no man had known. The
servant gave Rebekah a gold ring weighing a half shekel and two bracelets weighing ten gold
shekels for quenching his thirst and giving drink to his camels. Rebekah brought the
servant to his parents and introduced him. As Rebekah was willing to go with the servant,
gifts were given as a dowry for Rebekah.
The meeting of Isaac and Rebekah at Negeb. The marriage of Isaac and Rebekah when he
was 40 years old.
3) Relate how Rebekah came to conceive and give birth of the twins.
Rebekah was barren so that Isaac prayed unto the Lord and so his wife conceived.
There was struggling inside Rebekah’s womb so that she inquired about it unto the Lord.

37
CED 1 : Understanding the Old Testament /MAGacutan
And the Lord told her that there are two children in her womb – two nations are
represented in her womb and they shall be separated; the one shall be stronger than the
other and the older shall serve the younger. When they were born, the first came out red
with hair all over his body and he was called ESAU, while the second came out holding his
brother’s heel, he was called JACOB.
4) How come Jacob continued the descendancy over his brother Esau?
25:27-34 – 27:1-45
As they grew up, Esau became a cunning hunter, a man of the field while Jacob was a plain
and quiet man, dwelling in tents. Isaac favored Esau because he did eat of his venison/game
but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Esau Despised his Birthright. (25:29-34) One day as Esau came home from his hunting, he
was famished and smelled what Jacob had been cooking. He asked food from Jacob (thus
he was called Edom) but Jacob told him to sell his birthright first. Esau said, “I am about
to die; of what use is my birthright?” After this he swore to Jacob and sold his birthright
so that in exchange Jacob gave Esau bread and red pottage of lentils.
The Giving of Isaac’s Blessing to Jacob (27:1-45)
When Isaac was old and his eyes grew dim and could not see, he called for Esau and told
him that he is old already and may soon die. So he wanted him to go out in the field to
hunt and prepare him his favorite food and after eating it he will then give his blessing
unto him. Rebekah overheard the conversation between Isaac and Esau so that she
instructed Jacob to fetch her two kids of goat as she will cook it the way Isaac wanted and
so loved and let him serve it to his father. Jacob resisted because of fear but his mother
told him to just obey. Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau and put on to Jacob;
put the skins of the kids on Jacob’s hands and neck and handed him the food and the
bread that she cooked.
Isaac’s Deception
Jacob went to his father and offered the foods. Isaac was amazed how soon he returned so
as he had been hearing the voice of Jacob h asked him to get close to touch him to make
sure if he was really Esau and upon feeling the hairy part of the hands of Jacob, he ate the
food and bread. After eating, he called again for Jacob to kiss him and as he smelled the
smell of the garments of Esau he had given the blessings to Jacob. Now came Esau. As
he offered the savory food he prepared for his father, Isaac trembled violently for he had
given all the blessings to Jacob who beguiled him. Esau cried out exceedingly and bitterly
and asked his father to bless him and blessed him but to be the servant of his brother.
Esau hated his brother Jacob very much that he planned to kill him and as Rebekah was
made known about it, so she told Jacob to flee to her brother’s house – Laban in Haran.
27:46 – 28:5 – Isaac’s Charge to Jacob. Isaac blessed Jacob and charged him not to
marry one of the Canaanite women but to go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel, his
mother’s father and take as wife from the daughters of Laban, his mothers’ brother.
Esau went to Ishmael and took to wife Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael.

words. (Pleae pass this activity on October 2, 2020)

1. Who is to be blamed why Jacob became the third patriarch and not Esau? Is it Isaac,
Rebekah, Esau or Jacob? Explain.

39
CED 1 : Understanding the Old Testament /MAGacutan
After Jacob had deceived his father and had stolen the blessings that
was meant for Esau, he needs to leave his parents to get rid of the wrath
of Esau and to flee to Haran to his Uncle Laban’s house. How did Jacob
fare as he journeyed to Paddan-aram (Haran)? Continue reading and know how he was given
another name that became significant in the life of the Chosen People of God.

JACOB – THE THIRD PATRIARCH

Genesis 28 – 35

Jacob ran away to Haran. Along the way, God told Jacob in a dream that He would protect
Jacob and bring him back again to this land. He had seen the ladder set up on the earth to
heaven.

1) What was the dream of Jacob in the city of Luz? (28:10-17)

He dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth and
the top of it reached to heaven (STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
which was also called JACOB’S LADDER) and the angels
were ascending and descending and the Lord stood above it
as he introduced Himself and told him that the land on which
he laid will be given to him and that his descendants will be
like the dust of the earth. That God will be with him and
keep him wherever he goes. Jacob called the name of the
place BETHEL as he said that place was the house of the
Lord – so the gate of heaven.
2) What was the promise/vow made by Jacob unto the Lord? (28:20-22)
If God will keep His promise for him then Jacob will build a house of God at the stone which
he had set up for a pillar and everything that God will give him he will give the TENTH.
3) How did Jacob meet Rachel? 29:4—12
As Jacob reached the east, he saw a well in the field with three flocks of sheep lying beside it
with their shepherds. He asked them where they come from. They answered from Haran.
And as he asked about Laban, they told him that his daughter Rachel is coming with their
sheep. (It was their practice to gather altogether so that the stone is rolled from the mouth
of the well and water their flock.) As Jacob had seen Rachel, he immediately opened the
well and watered the flock of Laban and kissed Rachel and introduced himself.
Jacob married Leah and Rachel. (Genesis 29 – 30) He had served Laban for seven years
and had given Leah. For Rachel, he again served for another seven years. When God saw
that Leah was hated, God opened her womb and conceived and bore a son until she had
given Jacob 6 sons, and two sons from her maidservant Zilpah (Gen. 35:22-26) God
remembered Rachel and bare a son, named Joseph. She had two sons and another two sons
from her handmaid Bilhah.
4) How was Jacob given the two daughters of Laban as wives? (29:15-30)
After staying with Laban for a month, Laban asked him what shall his wage be. (VV. 18-20)
As he loved Rachel because her eyes were beautiful and lovely, he told Laban that he will
serve him seven years for Rachel. Laban deceived Jacob – instead of sending Rachel, he sent
Leah

40
CED 1 : Understanding the Old Testament /MAGacutan
instead so that Jacob served Laban for seven more years. Jacob reasoned that it is not the
practice in his country to give the younger before the first born.
5) How many sons were given by Leah and Rachel to Jacob?
As the Lord had seen that Leah had been hated, he opened her womb. (29:31)
Reuben – “because the Lord has looked upon my affliction.”
Simeon – “because the Lord had heard that I am hated.” To
Levi – “her husband will be joined unto her.”
Judah – “she will praise the Lord.”
Rachel had given her maid Bilhah to Jacob to bear children. (30:1-8)
Dan – “God had heard her voice and judged her.”
Naphtali – “with great wrestling with her sister she prevailed.”
Leah had given her maid Zilpah to bear more children. (30:9-13)
Gad – “a troop cometh.”
Asher – “Happy am I for the daughters will call her blessed.”
Leah after she was allowed by Rachel to sleep with Jacob because of mandrakes she
asked from Leah after Rebekah gave her got pregnant again. (30:14-21)
Isachar = “because she had given her maiden to her husband, God hath given her
hire.”
Zebulun = “God had endowed me with a good dowry, now will my husband dwell with
me.” (V.21 = Dinah was born)
Now God remembered Rachel and had given her a son through --
Joseph – “God hath taken away her reproach. The Lord shall add to me another son.”
Rachel as she was dying because she had hard labor. (35:18-21)
Benjamin – the youngest son of Rachel

Jacob Returns to Canaan (31:1)

Laban’s sons grumbled against Jacob of taking away their father’s wealth. The Lord
commanded Jacob to return to the land of his father and kindred and he will be with him.
Jacob confronted the two wives and they agreed to go away. The fleeing away of Jacob from
Haran. Laban pursued Jacob because of the stolen image. Rachel had taken the image of
her father-in-law. Jacob’s outburst of all his feelings against Laban – with his stay with him
for twenty (20) years. Jacob sent messengers to his brother Esau. Esau’s messengers told
Jacob that Esau is coming to meet him. Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed but
prepared everything for the meeting.
6) On his way home, what was the incident happened as a result of the changing
of Jacob’s name? 32:22—28
Jacob wrestled with God and had power over Him and prevailed thus his name was to be
changed to Israel. As Jacob sent away his two wives and servants with eleven children left
alone, a man wrestled with him until the daybreak or breaking of the day. As He saw that
He can’t prevail with Jacob, He touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh as it was put out of joint
(limp). As the man pleaded to be set free, Jacob wanted Him to bless him first. Upon
knowing Jacob’s name, He changed it with ISRAEL – for he had striven with God and with
man and have prevailed.

41
CED 1 : Understanding the Old Testament /MAGacutan
In V.30, Jacob called the place PENIEL, which mean, “For I have seen God face to face,
and yet my life is prevailed/spared.”
7) The meeting of Jacob and Esau. (33:1—14)
Esau had shown forgiveness unto Jacob. Jacob came to the city of Shechem, Canaan and
erected an altar for the Lord and called it – El-Elohe-Israel == God, the God of Israel.
8) The visit of the Lord unto Jacob
Jacob built an altar at Bethel to remember God’s promise (35:10). God changed Jacob’s
name to Israel. In v. 11 God reiterated his promises unto his father Abraham and Isaac and
to his descendants as well. That Canaan will be given unto his family and descendants.
God visited Jacob and instructed him to go to Bethel and dwell there and made an altar for
the Lord. Jacob instructed the people to put away their foreign gods and to purify
themselves and changed their garments. As they journeyed, the people around them were
terrorized by God so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. Jacob reached Luz (Bethel)
and made an altar – El—bethel – God of Bethel. God blessed Jacob by formally telling
him that he will no longer be called Jacob but instead Israel. The blessings had been
reiterated as formalized given to Jacob – “I am God Almighty – Hebrew word EL
SHADDAI.
Jacob set a pillar and poured a drink offering and called the place where God had spoken with
him. – BETHEL.
9) The birth of Benjamin and the death of Rachel (35:16-20)
At Eprath (Bethlehem) – Rachel travailed and had hard labor. She called her son Benoni -- the
son of my sorrow but Jacob called him Benjamin – son of the right hand or son of the South.
Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath.

Although Joseph was the 11th son of Jacob but first son from Rachel, he
became the favorite son of his father. And because of this special
treatment of Jacob to him, his brothers hated him so much to the extent
that they wanted to kill him. How this love turned his life to great misery but eventually became
a blessing to the descendants of Abraham. I enjoin you again to continue reading this story to
understand how he became a blessing to his people.

A. JOSEPH – THE FAVORITE SON

OF JACOB
Genesis 37 – 50
1) Who is Joseph? The cause of the hatred of his siblings? (37:2 – 10)
 Seventeen years old, a shepherd; handsome and good looking; the first son of Jacob to
Rachel
 Brought evil report about his brothers to his father
 The favorite son of Jacob. He loved him more than any of his sons as he even made him
a long robe with sleeves made of different colors because he was the son of his old age.

42
CED 1 : Understanding the Old Testament /MAGacutan
 A dreamer. He had two dreams and when he told them about his dreams, they hated
him the more. The first dream goes this way: “The siblings were binding sheaves in the
field. Joseph’s sheaf arose and stood upright and the sheaves of his brothers gathered
round about his sheaf and bowed down to his sheaf.”
 The brothers’ reaction – “Is Joseph to reign or be in dominion over them?”
 The second dream goes this way too: “The sun, moon and stars are bowing down to
him.” His father rebuked him by saying, “will I and your mother and brothers come to
bow to the ground before you?”

2) Relate the conspiracy of the ten brothers against Joseph. (37:12—35)

As the brothers went to pasture their father’s flock, Jacob sent Joseph to look after his
brothers and give report about them together with the flock. As they were not found in
Shechem because they went to Dothan, Joseph followed after them. The brothers conspired
to kill him but Reuben delivered him out of their hands and advised them not to shed blood
but just throw him to the pit, that he might rescue him later on. Thus, they stripped him of
his robe and threw him at the pit.
As the brothers had been eating, they saw a caravan of
Ishmaelites coming from Gilead heading for Egypt. They
have agreed that instead of killing their brother it is better
for them to sell him to the traders so that they lifted him
out of the pit and sold him for twenty (20) shekels of silver.
They took Joseph’s robe and killed a goat and dipped the
robe in the blood and brought it to their father telling him
that they found it.
JUDAH married a Canaanite woman, Shua and bore a son, ER and married TAMAR. Er
became wicked so that God slew Er. Judah promised Tamar after giving his son Onan that
he will give his son Shelah as long as she will remain a widow in his house till Shelah grows
up. But he was not given to her that is why she disguised as a harlot and Judah took her and
bear her twins – Perez and Zerah.
3) What happened to Joseph in Egypt? (39:1—22)
Joseph was taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of the Pharaoh, the captain of the guard
bought him from the Ishmaelites. As the Lord was with Joseph, all he did prospered in his hands so
that Potiphar made him overseer or in charge in his house and all that he had. The wife of the
master seduced Joseph to lie with her but he kept on refusing. As she was able to get his garment, he
reported to her husband that the Hebrew went in to insult her and as she cried, he left his garment to
her. With Potiphar’s anger, he imprisoned Joseph but the Lord continued to be with him and
showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
4) How come the Pharaoh came to meet Joseph? (40:1—21)
Joseph interpreted the dreams of the Pharaoh’s baker and butler. The baker and the butler
offended the Pharaoh so he placed them under the custody of the captain of the guard. One
night they both dreamed: The butler had a vine before him with three branches. As soon as it
budded, its blossoms shot forth and the clusters ripened into grapes. The Pharaoh’s cup was
in his hand. INTERPRETATION: The three branches are three days. The Pharaoh will
lift up his head and restore him to his office/position after three days and will place cup in

43
CED 1 : Understanding the Old Testament /MAGacutan
Pharaoh’s hand. Thus Joseph pleaded unto the butler to remember him and get him out of
the prison. The chief baker dreamt that there were three cake baskets on his head. In the
uppermost basket, there were all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating it
out of the basket on his head.
INTERPRETATION: The three baskets are three days. Within three days, the Pharaoh will
lift up his head from him and hang him on a tree and the birds will eat the flesh from him.
5) The Pharaoh’s dream and Joseph’s interpretation (41:1—32)
Two years passed and the Pharaoh dreamed: The Pharaoh stood by the river, and there
came up out of the Nile seven cows sleek and fat and they fed in the reed grass. And behold,
seven other cows, gaunt and thin came up out of the Nile after them and stood by the other
cows on the bank of the Nile. And the gaunt and thin cows ate up the seven sleek and fat
cows. (He fell asleep and dreamed a second time.) == Seven ears of grain plump and good
were growing on one stalk. And after them, seven ears sprouted which were thin and
blighted by the east wind. And the thin ears swallowed up the seven plump and full ears.
As the Pharaoh became troubled, he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its
wise men but none of them were able to interpret his dream. The chief butler remembered
his fault unto Jacob and told him to the Pharaoh.
Joseph’s Interpretation of the Pharaoh’s Dream (41:25—32) == “The dream of the Pharaoh
is one: God had revealed the Pharaoh what is about to happen. The seven good cows and
the seven good ears are seven years; the dream is one. The seven lean and gaunt cows that
came out after are seven years and the seven empty ears blighted by the east wind are seven
years of famine. There will come seven years of plenty throughout all the land of Egypt but
after them there will arise seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the
land of Egypt; the famine will consume the land for it will be very grievous. And the
doubling of the Pharaoh’s dream means that the thing is fixed by God and God will shortly
bring it to pass.”
10) What was the proposal of Joseph to the Pharaoh? (41:33—36)
“That the Pharaoh should select a man discreet and wise and set him over the land of
Egypt. He should also appoint overseers over the land and take the fifth part of the produce
of the land of Egypt during the seven plenteous years. He should let them gather all the food
of these good years that are coming and lay up grain (granaries) under the authority of the
Pharaoh for food in the cities and let them keep it. That the food shall be a reserve for the
land against the seven years of famine which are to befall the land of Egypt, so that the land
may not perish through the famine. The Pharaoh told him that in as much as the Lord had
shown him everything / all the things, that none is discreet and wise, he shall be over the
house of the Pharaoh, and all his people shall order themselves as he commands. So Joseph
was thirty (30) years old when he was appointed governor of the land of Egypt. Joseph
stored up in every city grain in great abundance.
11) The Egyptian name of Joseph and his sons?
== ZAPHENATHPANEAH / ZAPHNATHPAANEAH
== The two sons of Joseph adopted by Jacob: MANASSEH – Making to forget, for Joseph
said, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s house.” EPHRAIM
– from a Hebrew word which means to be fruitful --- “For God has made me fruitful in
the land of my affliction.”
44
CED 1 : Understanding the Old Testament /MAGacutan
12) How did Jacob and family solve the problem of famine and came to live in
Egypt? (42:1—38)
The ten brothers went down to Egypt to buy grain. As Joseph had seen his brothers he
recognized them but treated them as strangers and spoke roughly to them asking where they
come from? He even accused them as spies to come and see the weakness of the land so that
they introduced themselves and Joseph tested his brothers . That one should go home and
take his youngest brother while the others would remain in prison. But after three days he
told them that one from them should remain/stay and confined in prison as the rest of them would go
and carry the grain for their households after which they should return and bring their youngest
brother with them. If not then they would die that is why they became guilty with what they had done
with their brother. When Reuben conscienticised them, Joseph turned away and wept. As he
returned, he took Simeon and bound him and ordered his men to fill their bags with grain and to
replace every man’s money in his sack and to give provisions for the journey. Upon returning to
Jacob in Canaan they reported to him all that befallen them.
So that Reuben asked his father to let Benjamin go with them and if he will not return him, Jacob
could slay his two sons. But Jacob didn’t allow Benjamin to go.
The Return of the Nine Brothers with Benjamin to Egypt (43:1—34). Their father had been sending
them back again to go to Egypt to buy food as they had eaten all the grain they bought. Judah
reminded his father what the man told them that they can’t see him unless they would bring their
brother. So if he will send Benjamin then they will go but if not they would not go. So Judah
promised his father that he will be surety (in charge) for him and of his hand shall Jacob require
Benjamin. Jacob agreed and send Benjamin with them. He instructed them to double their money as
they would take the choice fruits of the land with little balm and little honey. As Joseph had seen his
brother Benjamin, he instructed his steward of his house to bring the men into his house and slaughter
an animal for a dinner with them. The nine brothers were afraid at first. Then Simeon was taken
from the prison. When Joseph came home, they gave their present to him as they bowed down unto
him. When they dined with Joseph, they sat according to their birthright and Benjamin’s portion was
five times as much as any of theirs.
Joseph commanded his steward of his house to fill the man’s sacks with food as much as they can
carry and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack and on the sack of the youngest, he must put
his silver cup with his money for the grain. When they had gone but a short distance from the city,
Joseph commanded his steward to follow after them and would tell them, “How or why have you
returned evil for good?” When the steward overtook them, he told them that with whomever from
them would the silver cup be found, he will die and will also become a servant of Joseph. As the silver
cup was found at Benjamin’s sack, they rent their clothes, loaded their asses and returned to the city.
Joseph told them that it is only the man in whose hand the cup was found will be his slave so that he
was sending them back home. Judah went to him and reviewed everything that transpired unto them.
So that he became the surety of his brother unto his father, he was pleading to Joseph to let him
remain as the slave instead of Benjamin lest his father die if he
will not see his youngest son.

Joseph’s Confession (45:1—28)

Joseph could not control and hide his feelings anymore so that he
made known himself to his brothers. His brothers got
dismayed at his presence thus Joseph told the reason why he
was sent to Egypt. That God sent him (V. 5) before them to
preserve life and (V. 7) to preserve a remnant from them on earth.

Lesson 3

The community of Faith struggled

for liberation

The Exodus event is the most crucial event in the history of

Israel, the community of faith. It was through that historic
event that God demonstrated his purpose in binging liberation
of the oppressed and enslaved people. To the Israelites, the
Exodus event was the turning point in their history. That event
constituted their unique identity and destiny as a people.
This lesson consists of the book of Exodus: A) Exodus and Its
Meaning; B) The Birth, Calling and Leadership of Moses; C)
The Exodus, the Covenant and Sin of the People; D) The
Wilderness Wandering; E) At the Edge of Settlement.

At the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

1. Explain why the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt and how they were liberated from
slavery.
2. Discuss the meaningof Moses’ “burning bush” experience and what it tells about the
nature of God.
3. Explore, and internalize how God revealed Himself through the covenant people
4. Participate in discussions on the historical events of the Israelite under Egyptian
bondage, and the Exodus event under Moses’ leadership
5. Articulate learning on how God dealt with His people when they made a golden calf to
worship.

What happened to the family of Jacob with their stay in the land of
Egypt for so many years? Although Egypt became a place of
refuge at first, later on it became a place of suffering. Has God
forgotten His people especially His promise to Abraham? How did
God help His people with their struggle to liberate themselves from
their plight in Egypt? Please continue reading this lesson so you
would come to understand better the story of this chosen people.

EXODUS
MOSES is known as the writer of this book as could be read from
Luke 24:27; John 5:46

This is essentially a book about knowing God through personal experience. The plot centers on
the relationship that develops between God and the Israelites, from the dramatic meeting with
Moses at the burning bush to the glory of the Lord filling the tabernacle. In all of these, Moses
acts as the Mediator, the one who first makes the Lord known to the people and who
subsequently plays an important role in establishing the covenant relationship that enables the
Lord to dwell in the midst of the Israelites. Significantly, it is always God who takes the
initiative, revealing Himself not only through works, but also thru wonders and signs. In
Exodus, God both speaks and moves; moreover what He says happens.
EXODUS comes from Greek words:
“ex, ek” – out (of) from; beyond ; “t(h)odos” – way
--- which means “the way out” or “going out”; exit; departure; a marching out.
--- It was the event that terminated the sojourn of Israel in Egypt; the departure of Israel
from Egypt out of their bondage of slavery who was led by Moses.
--- This book tells how God delivered His people out of their slavery.
--- Exodus is a great description of God in many facets: His name, His characteristics, his
law, His power, and His desire to be loved, worshipped, and obeyed.
--- Exodus 15:11 reveals the God of Israel through the eyes of His mighty servant, Moses:
“There are no gods like you. You are wonderfully holy, amazingly powerful, a worker of
miracles.”
THE ISRAELITE’S ARRIVAL IN EGYPT -- Exodus 1:1—22
Exodus begins in an undramatic way by listing briefly the names of the twelve sons of Jacob
(Israel) and noting that on their arrival in Egypt the whole family numbered seventy individuals
(70). The rapid increase in the number of the descendants of Israel is clear evidence of God’s
blessing upon the Israelites. The enthronement of a new king, who had no knowledge of Joseph,
anticipates developments that will have important consequences for both the Israelites and the
Egyptians. The new Pharaoh viewed the fruitfulness of the Israelites as a major threat to the
continued security of his kingdom. The Egyptians had to act shrewdly and in unison against this
potential danger. Consequently, the Israelites were forced to labor in the construction of store
cities for Pharaoh.

51
CED 1 : Understanding the Old Testament /MAGacutan
Pharaoh’s actions are a chilling reminder of how one nation may seek to dominate and exploit
another. Paradoxically, the more the Egyptians oppressed the Israelites, the more they
increased in number. God’s intention to make Israel a great nation would not be thwarted by
callous human efforts. Faced with the continued growth of the Israelite population, Pharaoh
looked for another method of birth control under his orders the Hebrew midwives were to kill
all newborn boys. The midwives feared God and disobeyed the command of the king.
Determined to pursue his policy against the Israelites, the Pharaoh commanded his own people
to cast every new- born Hebrew boy into the Nile River.
The scene was set for the birth of Moses and his remarkable deliverance. Ironically, he
was not only rescued from the river by the Pharaoh’s own daughter but he also grew up under
the protection of the one who had threatened his very existence.

Exodus 2 --- The Birth of Moses

In spite of the Pharaoh’s attempts to destroy all male Hebrew children at birth, Moses was
preserved through the cunning of his mother. By an ironic twist of events, he grew up in the
Egyptian court.
MOSES – means “he was drawn out of the water,”
--- the national hero who delivered the Israelites from Egyptian slavery,
--- established them as an independent nation, and prepared them for entrance into Canaan.
--- He was born about 1520 B.C. of Israelite parents from the tribe of Levi in the land of
Egypt.
--- His father was Amram and his mother was Jochebed
--- His brother was Aaron and sister was Mirriam
--- He was drawn out of water by the Pharaoh’s daughter that’s why he was called “Moses.”
--- The Prince of Egypt but turned a fugitive and an exile in Midian
--- The shepherd of his father-in-law Priest Jethro or Reuel
--- The deliverer of the Israelites, the Lawgiver, a Prophet or spokesperson of God or
Mediator
--- In Acts 7:22—Stephen in his address to the Sanhedrin asserts that Moses was not only
instructed in the science and learning of the Egyptians but also was endowed with
oratorical ability and distinctive leadership qualities,
Moses’ Story:
Jochebed conceived of a son during that time that the
Pharaoh decreed all male children two years old and below to
be thrown into the Nile River. When she saw him he was a
godly robust child, she hid him for three months. But as he
had grown bigger, as she could not hide him anymore, she
made an ark of bulrushes and laid her son in it as she had
floated and hidden among the reeds near the riverbanks as
his daughter Miriam had to watch for him. The Pharaoh’s
daughter had seen him and Miriam went unto her
immediately offering to help a Hebrew woman to nurse the
boy of which she had given Moses to his mother to nurse her
and waged. As the child grew, Jochebed brought Moses to the Pharaoh’s daughter as her son. As he
had grown to become a man, at the age of 40, he went out and had seen the burden of his brothers.
52
CED 1 : Understanding the Old Testament /MAGacutan
Moses’ first valiant attempt to aid his own people ended in failure. While trying to pacify two fellow
Israelites he was reminded that he had killed an Egyptian. Fearing the vengeful hand of the Pharaoh,
Moses escaped to Midian where he spent a 40-year period in seclusion/exile. In the land of Midian
Moses found favor in the home of a priest named Jethro (also known as Reuel in the Hebrew or Reguel in
the Greek). In the course of time he married Jethro’s daughter Zipporah. As shepherd of his father-in-
law’s flocks Moses gained a first-hand geographical knowledge of the territory surrounding the Gulf of
Aqaba.
The Calling of Moses
Moses was shepherding his flock in Mt. Horeb when God appeared unto him through a
flame of fire in a burning bush that was not consumed. He was told to take his sandals off for he
was standing on a holy ground. God reveals what action He intends to take on behalf of the
oppressed Israelites: Moses is commissioned as the one who will lead the people out of Egypt.
God had seen the affliction of his people who were in Egypt and have heard their cry. So God is
sending him to the Pharaoh that he might send out his people out of Egypt through him, to tell
the Pharaoh to allow His people to have a three-day’s journey into the wilderness that they may
sacrifice to their Lord their God. Moses response was hardly surprising – “Who am I?” What
qualifications had Moses for this task? How could a fugitive from Egypt possible confront
Pharaoh. God’s response was direct, “I will be with you.”
Elements of the Meeting Between God & Moses are Noteworthy:
 Moses encounters God in a burning bush that was not consumed – the divine presence is
frequently symbolized by fire and smoke.
 Through God’s holiness (His awesome nature) He had to be approached with caution.
Moses removed his sandals.
The Commissioning of Moses
God commissioned Moses by giving him a threefold demonstration of his powers to be shown
or performed by Moses were to prove that he was called and sent by God.
 His shepherds rod/staff temporarily becomes a serpent/snake.
 His hand when hidden into his bosom and takes out will have leprosy and hidden again will
be healed.
 As he will fetch water from the Nile river and pour it on the ground, it would turn to blood.
Moses had another problem. He was not eloquent in speaking so that Aaron will be the
spokesman. So Moses and Aaron gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel and
had done all the instructions given by God. After showing the signs the people believed and
they bowed their heads and worshipped God.
Exodus 5 --- The First Encounter With the Pharaoh
Moses went to the Pharaoh to ask permission to take the Israelites on a short 3-day journey into
the desert in order that they might worship their God. The Pharaoh refused to accommodate
them because he suspects that if he allows them to go they will leave for good. Thus, the
Pharaoh would not change his mind unless a mighty hand compels him.
So: God’s call of Moses is a vivid reminder of how we are called to serve the living God.
The Reasons Why God Hardened the Heart of the Pharaoh:
 To show God’s power/mighty acts – by giving the ten plagues they will come to know that He
is the Lord (Exodus 7:4-5).

 All the people will bow down before Him – He will be exalted as the true God. (Exodus 11:8)

Signs and Wonders in Egypt -- Exodus 7:8 – 11:10

Although, they are often described as “the ten plagues,” this is not entirely designation:

 The biblical text refers to a few of them individually as plagues, as a whole they are more
frequently called “signs/wonders.”
 There are in fact eleven miraculous signs recorded. The first two were used to
demonstrate his divine calling.
Pharaoh paid no attention to the two wonders done by Moses because his own magicians were
able to perform/duplicate the same kind of wonders.
The staff becomes a snake (Exodus 7:8-13) Interestingly, the confrontation between Moses and
Pharaoh begins with the Egyptian king demanding a miracle. Obviously, Pharaoh was
convinced that in a show of strength, he had the power, through his sorcerers to defeat Moses.
Yet, while they were powerful enough to duplicate Aaron’s staff becoming a snake, their power
was less; Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staff.
PLAGUE -- anything that afflicts or troubles; a calamity; a scourge; divine punishment

1st Plague -- Exodus 7:14-25 -- The Water Becomes Blood

Through a fourfold repetition of the details associated with the water becoming blood, the
narrative highlights the extent and seriousness of the wonder performed jointly by Moses and
Aaron: Blood was everywhere in Egypt.
2nd Plague -- Exodus 8:1-15 -- The Plague of Frogs
The Nile shall swarm with frogs which shall come into their house, bedchamber,
bed……
3rd Plague -- Exodus 8:16-19 -- The Dust Becomes Gnats (Lice)
As Aaron smote the dust of the earth with his rod, it became lice in man and in beast.
The Egyptian magicians were unable to copy the actions of Moses, thus they admitted to the
Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.”
4th Plague -- Exodus 8:20-32 -- The Plague of Flies
The land of Goshen will be set apart so that no swarms of flies shall be there.
In this episode, detailed attention is given to the bargaining between Pharaoh and Moses
over where the Israelites may sacrifice to their God. The narrative highlights the deceitfulness
of Pharaoh in that once Moses had prayed on his behalf, he refused to let the people go. Similar
deceitfulness is revealed in 9:34 and 10:16-17.
5th Plague -- Exodus 9:1-7 -- The Death of the Livestock
There shall be grievous murrain that will kill the livestock.
The plague that came upon the livestock brought death only to the animals of the
Egyptians: not even one of the animals of the Israelites had died.
6th Plague -- Exodus 9:8-12 --- The Plague of Boils
Moses took ashes from the furnace and sprinkled it up toward heaven: and it became a
boil breaking forth with blains upon man and beast.
The magicians now found themselves weak and helpless in the face of these miraculous wonders.

7th Plague -- Exodus 9:13-35 -- The Plague of Hail
God will cause it to rain a very grievous hail mingled with fire in the field so that any
man and beast that was found in the field and shall not be brought home shall die.
8th Plague -- Exodus 10:1-20 -- The Plague of Locusts
Locusts had come up upon the land of Egypt and eat every herb of the land, even all that
the hail had left. They covered the face of the whole earth so that the land was darkened.
9th Plague -- Exodus 10:21-29 -- The Plague of Darkness
There was a thick darkness in Egypt for three days and they saw not one but these
Israelites had light in their dwellings. It tells us of the depth of Pharaoh’s deep hatred with
Moses.
10th Plague -- Exodus 11 -- 12 -- The Death of the First-born
God said, “For I will pass through the land of
Egypt this night and will smite all the firstborn,
both man and beast….”
God took the lives of all the first-born in
Egypt. He spared the first-born of Israel
(Passover). Pharaoh finally allowed the Israelites
to go away.
Instructions for the Passover
Every household of the Israelites should prepare a
lamb, one year old without blemish according to
the number of their family. The blood should be taken out and sprinkled on the doorpost and
lintel of their houses. The meat should be roasted to be eaten with unleavened bread and bitter
herbs in the evening while the angel of the death who is the Lord will Passover the land of Egypt.
The blood on the doorpost of the Israelites houses will
serve as a sign for the angel of death to Passover their houses thereby entering only the houses of
the Egyptians and kill their first born son.
During the night as the angel of death passed over the Egyptians’ houses and killed all the
firstborn son, there was great wailing all over the land. Even the only son of the Pharaoh died
also. When his god could not bring back the life of his son, he called for Moses and told him to
take his people out of the land of Egypt. So the following morning all the Israelites prepared to
leave out of the land of Egypt after four hundred and thirty years of enslavement in Egypt.

The Exodus -- Exodus 13:17-18

Moses led the people out of Egypt. God led the people
through the way of the wilderness of the Red Sea instead of
the way of the land of the Philistines, although it was near lest
the people repent when they see war and return to Egypt.
And the Lord went before them through the Shekinah Glory
as a pillar of cloud during the day, to lead them the way; and
by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light.

The Pharaoh changed his mind and chased after the Israelites. (Exodus 14:8-10)

God showed His great mighty act for the salvation of His people despite their hardheadedness
and disbelief. He commanded Moses to stretch his hand over the sea and divide it and provided
for the Israelites dry ground to pass by through the sea. Then the angel of God who went before
the host of Israel moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them
and stood behind them, coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And the night
passed without one coming near the other. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and
the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night (V. 21) and made the sea dry land,
and the waters were divided and the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry
ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right and on their left. As the Egyptians
pursued them, the Lord again commanded Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea, that the
waters may come back or returned to the Egyptians, so they were drowned. This is how the
Lord saved the Israelites during that day.
SHEKINAH GLORY – is that visible and luminous indication of God’s presence which
showed as: Pillar of cloud during the day; Pillar of fire during the night

Once the Israelites were in the wilderness, they now become a NATION. Their first form of
government was THEOCRACY. It comes from the Greek words theo which means God and
kratien which means to rule. So theocracy means a form of government wherein God is the
ruler. Even Moses is their Leader, God was their ruler or King.
Upon reaching the wilderness, they immediately encountered problems:
First Problem -- The water was bitter. As they could not drink the water of Marah because it
was bitter, God showed unto Moses a tree and told him to cast a branch into the waters and it
became sweet. – God made a statue and an ordinance for the people to follow.
Second Problem -- The whole congregation murmured and
complained against Moses because they have nothing to eat.
God provided them MANNA in the morning as their bread
and quails in the evening as their meat.
Third Problem – The people asked water from Moses. God
instructed Moses and Aaron to assemble the people and would
pass on them as they would take the elders to witness.
He took his rod and God will stand before him on the Rock at Horeb and as he will strike the
Rock twice, water shall come out of it.
Fourth Problem – Amalek fought with Israel at Rephidim
Moses instructed Joshua to choose men as they will go out and fight Amalek. Moses stood on
top of the hill with the rod of God on his hand. Whenever Moses held up his hand Israel
prevailed and whenever he lowered his hand Amalek prevailed. As Moses hand grew weary,
they took a stone and put him under him and he sat upon it and AARON and HUR held up his
hands, one on one side and the other on the other side so his hands were steady until the going
down of the sun so that Joshua moved down Amalek and his people at the edge of the sword.
Fifth Problem -- Moses in Judging the Israelites
Moses met his family in Midian as his father-in-law accompany them. He had seen how Moses
sat to judge the people, and the people stood about Moses from morning till evening as they
came to inquire of God to help solve their disputes. If this be the case, then they will soon wear
themselves out (get tired) for it is too heavy for him to do as he can’t perform it alone. Priest

Jethro advised Moses to represent the people and bring their cases unto God. That he will teach
his people the statutes and the decisions and let them know the way in which they must walk and
what they must do. So Moses had chosen able men from all the people who have fear on God,
trustworthy and hate bribe and place such men over the people as rulers of thousands, of
hundreds, of fifties and of tens and let them judge over the people at all times. Hard cases and
great matters be brought to him but small matters be upon them.

THE OLD COVENANT -- The Giving of the Ten

Commandments
Exodus 19 -- God reminded His people what He had done to the Egyptians, how he brought
them out as He bore them on eagle’s wings.
The Covenant (Ex. 19:5) = If they obey His voice and keep His
covenant, they shall be His own possession among all people for all
the earth is His and that they shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy
nation unto Him.
Moses was commanded to recall to the Israelites about the
covenant wherein they promised to do (V. 8).
How did God show Himself to the people as He descended to Mt.
Sinai?
– A thick cloud was upon the mountain as there was thunders and
lightning.
– Mt. Sinai was wrapped in smoke as the Lord descended upon the mountainin fire and the
whole mountain quaked greatly.
– God answered Moses in thunder.
--- And the Lord came down upon Mt Sinai and wrapped the mountain with smoke because
the Lord descended upon it with fire. And His voice was like a thunder and the earth
quaked every time God said the commandments.
The Words of the Covenant (Ex. 20:3-17) are the Ten Commandments (34:28)
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not make any graven image.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord Thy God in vain.
4. Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy.
5. Honor thy father and thy mother to live long here on the earth.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, goods and properties.
The Ten Commandments was written on two tablets of stones. And the tables were the work of
God ( Ex. 32:16), and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord. (Exodus 24:4) The appearance of the glory of the
Lord was like a devouring fire. (V. 17) Moses entered the cloud and stayed in the mountain 40
days and 40 nights. (V. 18)

The Threefold Division of the Law:

1. The Moral Code – This section is commonly known as the Ten Commandments. It is the revelation of Christ
(1 Cor. 10:4)
2. The Spiritual Code / Ceremonial Code – This section deals with the ordinances all of which foreshadow Christ
and salvation
3. The Social Code – This section deals with the judgments and divine laws of God’s new established for Israel. It
includes rules for diet, sanitation, quarantine, conservation, taxation and military service, marriage, divorce,
etc.

The Sin of the People

Sixth Problem – Ex. 32 – Worship of the Golden Calf

Moses was delayed on top of the Mountain for 40 days as God

had given him His commandments, statutes and ordinances.
So that the people became impatient doing nothing and
gathered to Aaron telling him to make gods for them. Thus,
Aaron collected their gold earring and fashioned it with a
graving tool and made a molten calf and introduced it as the
gods of Israel and Aaron built an altar and proclaimed to the
people by the morrow that they will have a feast to the Lord.
As God heard the merrymaking of the people, He told Moses
to go down to them for they have corrupted themselves by
making a golden calf and worshipped and sacrificed unto it.
As He had seen their stiff-necked ness, He wanted to be left
alone so that with His wrath it may burn hot and would consume them. But for Moses, God
will make him a great nation. Moses questioned the Lord with His anger when in fact it was
Him who had brought them out of Egypt through His great power and mighty act. What will
be the reaction of the Egyptians? And He reminded Him of His promise to Abraham, Isaac
and Jacob so that God repented of the evil which he thought to do to his people.
Moses went down from the mountain with the two tablets of stones or two tables of testimony
in his hands where God had written the Ten Commandments with His own hands. When he
had seen his people dancing, merrymaking, worshipping to the golden calf, he became
enraged and threw the tablet of stones at the foot of the mountain and with their naked shame
he stood in the gate of the camp shouting, “Who is on the Lord’s side?” And all the sons of
Levi gathered themselves together unto Him. He commanded them to put their sword on
their side and slay the rebellious men and three thousand were killed. Moses went up to the
mountain and pleaded to God to forgive His people but if not, blot him out of His book
(32:32) but the Lord told him that it’s only those who sinned against Him will he blot his
name out of His book. God punished His people through a plague for worshipping a golden
calf. God promised to go with Moses and the people as they traveled thereby sending His
angel to go before them to drive their enemies for they are a stiff-necked people. God said to
Moses that He will be gracious to whom He will be gracious, will show mercy to whom He will
show mercy but they will not see His face. God will give Moses a place where he will stand
