AIR RELEASE KIT

INSTALLTION

WHEELS INSTRUCTIONS

This kit contains components needed to convert a standard manual release XA-351 or
XA-331 (FW35 or FW33) fifth wheel top plate to an air release fifth wheel top plate. The
air release system is only available in a left-hand release. If your fifth wheel is equipped
with a right-hand release, you will need to obtain a new secondary lock arm (XA-3542-L)
and a new secondary lock roll pin (XB-21-S-500-2750). Follow the right-hand release
conversions procedures on Page 3.

1. All fifth wheel maintenance muse be performed
by a qualified service technician using proper
tools and safe procedures.
2. Use only genuine Holland parts.
3. Wear safety goggles during disassembly and
assembly of the fifth wheel.
4. Keep fingers away from all potential pinch points
in the fifth wheel.
5. Do not weld on this product. Do not deviate from
the instructions contained in this manual. Any
changes or deviations from these procedures will
void all warranties, express or implied, unless
prior written consent is obtained from Holland.
6. Always verify proper operation and adjust the
fifth wheel following the procedures contain in
this manual before placing back in service.

7. Insert the flat mounting tab of the air cylinder
(ITEM 13) through casting hole “D” and secure
by inserting and centering the spring pin (ITEM 7
14) through the hole in the tab. The tapered end Figure 6 8

(see Figure 7) must be removed and replaced with a
left-hand secondary lock (ITEM 19) and a new roll
pin (ITEM 17) as shown in Figure 8.

3. Complete Steps 3 through 9 of left-hand
conversion procedures, as described on Page 2.
4. Install new secondary lock (ITEM 19) on the
opposite side casting lug as shown in Figure 8.
The torsion spring (ITEM 18) can be reused, but a
new roll pin (ITEM 17) is required. Check lock for
proper spring action. YOU MUST VERIFY PROPER
FIFTH WHEEL ADJUSTMENT WHEN THE
CONVERSION PROCEDURE IS COMPLETE! Refer
to Lock Adjustment Procedure below.

If the locks are too tight, turn the adjustment
bolt clockwise 1/4 turn at a time until properly
adjusted.
If the locks are too loose, turn the adjustment
bolt counterclockwise 1/4 turn at a time until
properly adjusted.
The fifth wheel is properly adjusted when there is
resistance between the locks and the lock tester,
but the lock tester can still be rotated by hand, as
shown in Figure 10.
4. Pull the release handle and remove the lock
tester. Now, lock and unlock the fifth wheel
several times and re-check adjustment.

LOCK ADJUSTMENT:
1. Turn the fifth wheel right side up and close the
locks using a Holland Lock Tester (ITEM 22). See
Holland publication FW130 for operating
instructions for Holland TF-TLN-1000 kingpin
lock tester.

2. Verify that the locks are completely closed

around the kingpin, as shown in Figure 9.

If the fifth wheel does not operate properly DO NOT USE IT! Either disassemble and repeat rebuilding
procedures or contact your nearest Holland representative for assistance. Never use a fifth wheel that does
not operate properly.
