OTHER EVIDENCE (Formative):

● Observation: Watching the students during lessons to note who seems to be making sense of it and who doesn't.
● Paying attention to who is filling out their notes and who isn't.
● Verbal explanations during in class } participation.
● Checklist: checking off for when a student has demonstrated an outcome

Stage 3 – Learning Plan

GLO: Describe and analyze position and motion of objects and shapes.
SLO: Demonstrate an understanding of the congruence of polygons.
Lesson Activities (Learning Experiences) Assessment Resources
Lesson #

Learning Intention: Formative: Symmetry

1 - Students will be able to understand what symmetry is, what rotational symmetry is, and how to Observation Notes
calculate the angle of rotation. (Symmetry) Package
+Slides
Hook:
- Series of objects sorted into two groups (this group is symmetrical and this group is not) The
students have to figure out that the key is symmetrical.

Learning Activities:
- Mini lesson on symmetry paired with filling out notes package.
- Activity involving students finding the center of rotation, order of rotation, and rotational
symmetry.
- Mini lesson paired with practice examples on how to calculate the angle of rotation.
Closure:
- Share the students shape's they created with each other and have a few explain why it is
symmetrical for the requirements. Remind students that tomorrow is transformations.

Learning Intention: Formative: Symmetry
2 - Students will be able to understand what transformations are and how to transform a polygon. Observation Notes
(Transformations) Package
+Slides
Hook:
- Before students pull their notes out, ask them what they think transformations are, have them
come up with a definition or an idea and workshop it together. Lead into the three types of a
transformation.

Learning Activities:
- Mini lesson on transformations with one example for each type of transformation for students
to fill out in their notes.

Closure:
- If you wanted to move yourself out the door just so you were standing facing the door how
would you transform yourself there? Translation and maybe reflection?

Learning Intention: Formative: Symmetry

3 - Students will be able to understand what tessellations with polygons are and how to construct Observation Notes
them using translations and reflections. (12.1 + 12.2) Package
+Slides
Hook:
- Review terminology like polygons, what a plane is in math, equilateral, pentagon, hexagon,
octagon, quadrilateral. Have students draw them on the board.

Learning Activities:
- Lesson on tessellations paired with filling out notes package for 12.1
- Reading activity pages 448-450
- Lesson reviewing definitions of the transformations
- Reading activity pages 452-455
- Online tessellation activity

Closure:
- Remind what a tessellation is and how to transform a polygon.

Learning Intention: Formative: Symmetry

4 - Students will be able to construct tessellations using rotations and create escher style Observation Notes

tessellations. (12.3 + 12.4) +Slides

Hook:
- Math connections activity with discussion relating to previous knowledge.
Learning Activities:
- Lesson on constructing tessellations
- Lesson on what an Escher-Style tessellation is and how to make them
- Reading activity pages 457 - 459 + textbook Q's
- Creating an Escher-Style tessellation with stencils.

Closure:
- Break happens after this so we will do two days of review after and then you'll have the unit
exam the wednesday after our break.

Learning Intention: (Review) Formative: Symmetry

Hook: Package
- Remind students this is the last class before their exam so if they have any questions please +Slides
ask as they're working.
