1. Consider f (t) = f1 (t) + f2 (t) where f1 (t) and f2 (t) are energy signals.
(a) Show that f (t) is also an energy signal.

|f1 (t)| dt · |f2 (t)|2 dt.)

(b) When is the energy of f (t) equal to the sum of the energy of f1 (t) and f2 (t)?
2. A system may or may not be (1) memoryless, (2) time-invariant, (3) linear, (4) causal,
and (5) stable. Determine which of these properties hold and which do not hold for each
of the following systems. In each example, y(t) denotes the system output and x(t) is the
system input.
R 2t
(a) y(t) = −∞ x(τ )dτ
(b) y(t) = x(t) + x(t − 2) for x(t) ≥ 0, and y(t) = 0 otherwise.
3. Consider r∆ (t) defined on page 33 of the lecture note for Ch.2.
(a) For f (t) = (1 − e−t )u(t), evaluate g∆ (t) = f (t) ∗ (dr∆ (t)/dt).
(b) What is the limit of g∆ (t) as ∆ → 0.
(c) Discuss the results obtained in part (b).
4. Find the Fourier series representation of the following signals. Clearly state what the
fundamental frequency is if there is a solution. If there is no solution, explain why.
(a) sin 2πt + cos(4π/3)t
(b) cos πt + sin t
5. The distance between two bounded energy functions f (t) and g(t) can be defined as
dist∞ (f, g) = max |f (t) − g(t)|.

One can also use another definition as follows

dist2 (f, g) = |f (t) − g(t)|2 dt.
