1. Consider the following signals

x1 (t) = Aejω1 t , x2 (t) = Bejω2 t , x(t) = x1 (t) + x2 (t),

where ω1 and ω2 are nonzero real numbers.

(a) Give the condition for x(t) to be periodic. Under the resulting condition, what is the
period of x(t)?
(b) Compute the (average) power of these signals.
(c) Is the power of x(t) equal to the sum of the power of x1 (t) and that of x2 (t)? If not,
give the condition for this equality to hold.

2. (a) The following systems have input x(t) or x[n] and output y(t) or y[n]. For each
system, determine whether it is (i) memoryless, (ii) stable, (iii) causal, (iv) linear,
and (v) time-invariant.

x(−t), t ≥ 0

• y(t) = e −∞ x(τ +2)dτ
R t/2
• y(t) = −∞ x(τ ) dτ
• y[n] = 2x[2n ]
• y(t) = x1 (t)x2 (t) + x1 (t) + x2 (t) (x1 (t) and x2 (t) are the two inputs, i.e.
x(t) = [x1 (t) x2 (t)]T is the input vector.)
(b) Give an example of linear systems, which are not time-invariant.

3. Consider the following relations:

Z ∞ Z ²
f (t)δ(t)dt = f (t)δ(t)dt = f (0)
−∞ −²
Z ∞ Z ²
f (t)δ̇(t)dt = f (t)δ̇(t)dt = −f˙(0),
−∞ −²

where f (t) and f˙(t) are continuous at t = 0, and ² is any positive number.

(a) Show that Z Z

(b) Show that
g(t) ∗ δ(t) = g(t), g(t) ∗ δ̇(t) = ġ(t),

assuming that these convolutions are well defined.

(c) Consider the following differential equation

s̈(t) + a1 ṡ(t) + a2 s(t) = b1 δ(t) + b2 u(t),

where u(t) is the unit step function. Assuming s(0−) = ṡ(0−) = 0, prove, by inte-
grating both sides of this differential equation from 0− to 0+ twice (one at a time),
that
ṡ(0+) + a1 s(0+) = b1 , s(0+) = 0.

(d) Consider the following differential equation

ḧ(t) + a1 ḣ(t) + a2 h(t) = b1 δ̇(t) + b2 δ(t).

Assuming h(0−) = ḣ(0−) = 0, prove, by integrating both sides of this differential

equation from 0− to 0+ twice (one at a time), that

ḣ(0+) + a1 h(0+) = b2 , h(0+) = b1 .

(e) Using the results in parts (c) and (d), find the step and impulse responses of the
following system.
ÿ(t) − 3ẏ(t) + 2y(t) = 2ẋ(t) + 4x(t).

4. Consider a causal discrete-time LTI system written as follows:

y[n] − 1.7y[n − 1] + 0.6y[n − 2] = x[n] − 0.8x[n − 1], y[−1] = y[−2] = 0,

where x[n] is the input, and y[n] the output.

(a) Find the unit impulse response of the system.

(b) Find the unit step response of the system.
(c) Determine whether this system is stable or not.

5. Suppose that the Fourier series representation of a periodic signal f (t) exists.

(a) Give the procedure for finding the Fourier coefficients.

(b) Give an outline of showing that the Fourier series representation exists.
