4. Innovation Title
Tree Coverage Tracker
According to statistics, 1/3 (33%) of the total area in our country must be forested.
➢ Also according to a study published in the journal Science, planting approximately 1 trillion trees
worldwide could help combat climate change and restore biodiversity. Assuming a global population
of around 7.9 billion people, each person would need to plant around 127 trees to reach this target
➢ When we divide an area into many divisions, we can see that some areas have uneven
percentages of tree coverage, with some of them densely forested while others have little to no
vegetation.
➢ The initiative of planting more trees to protect natural vegetation needs to be backed up with
accurate and reliable data on where exactly we need to plant trees and to what amount we should
plant so that we can evenly plant trees in all areas, thereby saving resources to plants and also
making sure that we aren’t leaving any place sparsely forested.
➢ This is especially vital in metropolitan cities and small industrial towns where the amount of trees
is below a certain minimum required percentage. Also, the large proportions of buildings to that of
vegetation in the cities can be unhealthy. We all like some amount of greenery to balance the no of
crowded buildings and houses.
➢ We must also be aware of the fact that how tree coverage percentage in an area can affect other
environmental factors like air purity, rain probability, and oxygen levels. This indirectly leads to
drastic changes in our physical and mental well-being.
Our main solution is identifying whether an area has the minimum required trees.
❖ Thus our model divides any area into small divisions from an image of the landscape(e.g
Google Maps provide a view of the terrain) and by detecting the amount of green area (in our case,
through OpenCV) and dividing it by the total area, to get the resultant tree coverage percentage.
Although it’s a rough estimation, it can work well enough to be compared to ideal percentage of
33% of forested area.
❖ By comparison, we can know how many trees, each person has grown per in his or her area, and
due to this we have assigned a personal responsibility to an individual to take action to protect
nature. We have also lessened the burden of respective authorities and NGO’s who are put to the
task of planting trees. Thus, we created a feeling of unity and responsibility among people towards
Mother Nature.
❖ Through this, we also improve the environment, air purity, oxygen level and make a place more
clean, peaceful, and refreshing. Too many buildings and no trees can sometimes make one feel
suffocated and depressed. Thus this project can improve not the outside factors but also can act as a
healing effect for people in that area.
6. What ATL tools / technologies have you used while developing your project?
● A website that needs a periodic update on the tree coverage percentage of that area.
● Data regarding natural factors like temperature, space available, soil type, nutrients seeds, and
favorability of growth in that area.
● A reliable database to handle large amounts of data.
● Contacts of respective authorities to provide them with the required data.
● Networking with NGOs and tree planting authorities for coordination.
We have used OpenCV to extract the amount of green area in a particular district and divide by its
total area to get the current tree coverage and compare it with the minimum tree cover percentage.
7. Upload Research Document of your project and your team group photo
Note:-
.pdf/.jpg/.jpeg/.png/.doc/.ppt attachments are accepted. Multiple documents can be uploaded (Total
size 10 MB).
This is not mandatory, but there are extra points given to teams who do good research and submit a
good research document.

Propose the solution to the Problem Identified (Max 100 words)
District: Yelahanka
Regional Terrain of Yelahanka(Bangalore)
❑ To check tree coverage percentage in
Yelahanka and compare it with required
percentage of 33%
● Data regarding natural factors like temperature, space available, soil type,
nutrients seeds, and favorability of growth in that area.

Target Audience:
Identify the market your idea aims to help and how you determine
that this market needs help.
❑ Our main target audience is the respective authorities and those taking
initiatives to planting trees who are in charge of environmental
protection in that particular area and are in dire need of accurate data
of suitable places to grow the plants. We provide them with the
necessary data so that they can take immediate action on planting
trees in the required areas with minimum resources and maximum
efficiency or stop unnecessary constructions or cutting down of trees
that can reduce the tree coverage percentage to go beyond the
minimum level.
9
Success criteria/KPIs:
● Identify a few specific metrics such as cost, feasibility, affordability etc. that you will
use to determine whether your Protype has passed.
● The full form of KPI is the Key Performance Indicator. The critical measures of success
towards an intended outcome are KPIs.
• Data Collection: Utilize satellite imagery, remote sensing technologies, and ground-based
sensors to gather data on existing tree coverage.
Integrate data from environmental databases and open sources for comprehensive analysis.
• Algorithm Development: Develop algorithms to process and analyze the collected data,
determining the optimal percentage of tree coverage for a given area based on ecological
factors.
Implement machine learning techniques to improve accuracy and adaptability over time.
• User Interface: Design an intuitive and user-friendly interface accessible via web and mobile
platforms.
Enable stakeholders to input relevant data, monitor real-time tree coverage, and receive
recommendations for reforestation efforts.
11
Project scope: ● Detail your plan for rolling out your project
12
Conclusion / Further Enhancements:
The Tree Tracker project aims to develop a
comprehensive system for monitoring and managing
the percentage of tree coverage per unit area to
facilitate efficient and sustainable reforestation efforts.
By utilizing advanced technology, data analysis, and
intelligent algorithms, the system will help
organizations and environmental agencies determine
the minimum number of trees required for a given
area, optimizing resources and promoting effective
reforestation practices.
