LO. Generate and describe linear number

sequence.
LR. 4.1

Pupil’s Book, page 14-15

RECAP!
Solve the equation by finding the value of the
letter or variable.
a.) 12 + m = 20 Answer: m = 8

b.) x – 35 = 30 Answer: x = 65

c.) 5y – 20 = 25 Answer: y = 9
A linear number sequence is a sequence
where each value increases or decreases by
the same amount each time.
Example 1: What pattern we can see based on
this sequence?
Example 2: What is the 11th term of 4-x sequence?
Answer: 44

Example 3: What is the 20th term of 5-x sequence?

Answer: 81
Example 4: What formulae can we make for 4-x
sequence out of the given data?
Answer: 4n, where n represents the term.
Example 5: What formulae can we make for 5-x
sequence out of the given data?
Answer: 4n + 1, where n represents the term.
To generate the rule or formula, follow these.
1.) Identify the steps from one term to the next.
steps = 4
2.) Identify the first term.
first term = 4
3.) Use the steps to get the first term.
first term = the steps(term)
= 4n, where n represents the term
Example 6: Describe the linear
sequence.
3 8 13 18
The step is 5.
The first term is 3.
The first term = step - 2
The nth term = 5n - 2
Formula = 5n – 2
Example 6: What is the 9th term of the
sequence using the rule 5n – 2?

3 8 13 18
9th term = 5n – 2
= 5(9) – 2
= 45 – 2
= 43
