Lesson 4 – Patterns
Objectives:
Formulate the rule in finding the nth term using
different strategies (looking for a pattern, guessing
and checking, working backwards)
CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME
EXAMPLES OF NUMBER PATTERNS?

2, 4, 6, 8, 10…

Could the numbers 1, 5, 12, 13, 61 be a pattern?

Give me a reason for your answer?

Enrichment Activity
PATTERNS
A pattern is an ordered set of numbers, or sequences of shapes, or other
mathematical objects that are arranged based on some rules.

Examples:
3, 6, 9, 12, 15

Lesson Proper
TWO CATEGORIES OF PATTERNS
A repeating pattern it repetitive or cyclic. The pattern is a given or chosen set,
then repeated in the same order and attributes as the given one. The terms in
repetitive pattern are easy to visualize.
Examples:

Lesson Proper
Example 2: 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3…

Example 3: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 5, 4, 3, 2…

Example 4: 1, 8, 1, 8, 1, 8, 1, 8, 1…
Lesson Proper
TWO CATEGORIES OF PATTERNS
A growing pattern is a set of terms, the 1st term of which is given or determined and the
succeeding terms in the pattern depends on the preceding term and its position based on
a rule or formula. The terms in a growing pattern, like the repetitive pattern, are also
easy to visualize.
Example 1:

1st Term 2nd Term 3rd Term

Lesson Proper
1st Term 2nd Term 3rd Term

Term Number So if we
Number of determine the 11th term of the
Figures n = 2 in the
pattern, we substitute rule.
1 1(2) = 2
n(2)
2 2(2) = 4
3 3(2) = 6= 11(2)
4 4(2) = 8= 22
n n(2)
Lesson Proper
Example 2:
+2 +2 +2 +2 +2
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11…
Example 3:
+10 +10 +10 +10 +10
3, 13, 23, 33, 43, 53…
Lesson Proper
FORMULATE A PATTERN OR RULE
Example 1: Write an equivalent rule for the pattern
5, 10, 15, 20
This list of numbers is called a sequence.
A sequence is a list of numbers or objects arranged in a particular order.
Each number or object is called a term of the sequence.
Each term can be obtained by using a pattern or a rule.
In the sequence 5, 10, 15, 20, ., the pattern for getting each term is obtained by
adding 5 to the succeeding term.
5 10 15 20
+ 5 + 5 +5 Lesson Proper
The "n" represents the position.
A relationship between each term and its position in the
sequence is given by the expression
5n where n = 1, 2, 3, 4, ...
Lesson Proper
GUESS AND CHECK STRATEGY
Example: Write an equivalent rule for the pattern 4, 7, 10, 13.

Lesson Proper
WORKING BACKWARDS
Example: Write an equivalent rule for the pattern 4, 7, 10, 13.

Another strategy that may be used is by working backwards.
Using the sequence 4, 7, 10, 13,..., We can subtract 3 from the
last term to get the previous term. That is,

The following examples show how to describe the pattern of a

given sequence and obtain the next three terms.

Lesson Proper
Problems can be solved using patterns of a
given sequence.
1. Ticket sales for a fundraising concert
increases in sales every day. On the first day,
125 tickets were sold, the second day 150, the
third day 175, and 200 on the fourth day. What
is the total number of tickets sold after 7 days
if the pattern continues?
Given:

Lesson Proper
Find: the total number of tickets sold after 7 days
Solution:
125, 150, 175, 200,...
+ 25 + 25 +25
Add 25 to the succeeding term.
So, 200 + 25 = 225 5th day
225 + 25 = 250 6th day
250 + 25 = 275 7th day
The total number of tickets sold after 7 days is 125 + 150 + 175 +
200 + 225 + 250 + 275 = 1400.

Lesson Proper
2. In an experiment on plant growth, a group of
students observed that a plant grows twice its
height the day before. If the original height was 3
cm, how tall will the plant be on the fifth day?
The plant grows twice its height the day before.

Lesson Proper
Find: the height of the plant
on the fifth day solution: if
the plant continues to grow,
the sequence will be:
Therefore, the plant will be
48 cm tall on the 5th day.

2. Let’s Practice B (numbers 1 – 3) page 169.

Formative
Patterns in designs are very much observed
in our surroundings. But did you know that
before laying out these patterns, identifying
the rule of the pattern is essential?
How is it essential for you?
