determining the terms of a sequence? 4. Answer will vary depend on the students.
C. Discussion
A sequence is a succession of numbers in a specific order. Each number in a sequence is
called a term. The terms are formed according to some fixed rule or property. They are arranged
as the first term, second term, the third term and so on. A sequence with definite number of terms
is a finite sequence, in which the first and last terms are clearly identified.

Sequence First Term Last Term Number of terms

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 1 5 5
-2, 4, -8, …, -2048,
-2 4096 12
4096
38, 33, 28, 23, 18, 13 38 13 6

The first and the last terms of a sequence are referred to as extremes. And the terms
between are means.
A sequence with no definite number of terms is an infinite sequence. Usually start or end
with an ellipsis (three dots).
Example of infinite sequence:
-9, -2, 5, 12, 19, …
25, 17, 9, …
…, -64, -49, -36, -25, -16
In the sequence 5, 10, 15, 20, 25,... we can denote the terms as follows:
a1 = 5
a 2 = 10
a 3 = 15
a 4 = 20
a 5 = 25
The Nth term is the general rule for a sequence. It allows us to find any term in the
sequence by substituting the number of the term into where n is in the rule.
Example #1: a n a n=5 n

a 1 = 5 (1) = 5
a 2 = 5 (2) = 10
a 3 = 5 (3) = 15
a 4 = 5 (4) = 20
a 5 = 5 (5) = 25
Example #2: a n=2 n+1
a 1 = 2(1) + 1 = 3
a 2 = 2(2) + 1 = 5
a 3 = 2(3) + 1 = 7
a 4 = 2(4) + 1 = 9
a 5 = 2(5) + 1 = 11
n
Example #3: a n=2
a 1 = 21 = 2
a 2 = 22 = 4
a 3 = 23 = 8
a 4 = 24 = 16
a 5 = 25 = 32
Example #4: a n=−3 n+15
a 1 = -3(1) + 15 = 12
a 2 = -3(2) + 15 = 9
a 3 = -3(3) + 15 = 6
a 4 = -3(4) + 15 = 3
a 5 = -3(5) + 15 = 0
Example #5: a n=5 n+2
a 1 = 5(1) + 2 = 7
a 2 = 5(2) + 2 = 12
a 3 = 5(3) + 2 = 17
a 4 = 5(4) + 2 = 22
a 5 = 5(5) + 2 = 27
D. Abstraction
1. What is sequence?
A sequence is a succession of numbers in a specific order.
2. What is the difference between finite and infinite sequence?
Finite sequence has definite number of terms, where first term and last term are clearly
stated. Infinite sequence has no definite number of terms and usually starts or end with
an ellipsis (or three dots).
3. What is the nth term of the sequence?
The Nth term is the general rule for a sequence. It allows us to find any term in the
sequence.
4. How do you find the terms in a sequence using the nth term?
By substituting the number of term into where n is in the rule or equation.
5. How can you apply the ideas you’ve learned today in real life?
Instead of counting the possible value of terms, if we already know the formula we can
easily find any term.
