I.CONTENT STANDARD II. PERFORMANCE STANDARD

The learner demonstrates The learner is s able to formulate

understanding of key concepts of challenging situations involving sets
sets and the real number system. and real numbers and solve these in a
variety of strategies.

III.LEARNING COMPETENCY

Learning Competency 42: The learner describes well-defined sets, subsets,

universal sets, and the null set and cardinality of sets. M7NS-Ia-1

At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:

a. define the well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, and the null set
and cardinality of sets;

b. illustrate well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, and the null set and
cardinality of sets; and

c. appreciate the use of sets in classifying objects around us.

MOTIVATION “Which is Which?

Which of the following does not belong to the group?

Why?

1. protractor, triangular ruler, ruler , pencil

2. square, rhombus, trapezoid, rectangle
3. santan, narra, gumamela, orchids,
4. pink, red, yellow, blue
5. avocado, mango, apple, cashew

A. Activity 1 Group It by Yourself!

Below are some objects. Group them as you see fit and
label each group.

⮚ How do you find the activity?

B. Analysis ⮚ How many groups are there?

⮚ Does each object belong to a group?

⮚ Is there an object that belongs to more than one

group? Which one?

C. Abstraction Here are the important terms you need to remember:

1. A set is a well-defined group of objects, called

elements that share a common characteristic.

For example, 3 of the objects above belong to the

set of head covering or simply hats (ladies hat,
baseball cap, hard hat).

2. The set F is a subset of set A if all elements of F

are also elements of A.

For example, the even numbers 2, 4 and 12 all

belong to the set of whole numbers. Therefore, the
even numbers 2, 4, and 12 form a subset of the
set of whole numbers. F is a proper subset of A if
F does not contain all elements of A.

3. The universal set U is the set that contains all

objects under consideration.

4. The null set is an empty set. The null set is a

subset of any set.

5. The cardinality of a set A is the number of

elements contained in A.

Notations and Symbols

In this section, you will learn some of the notations and
symbols pertaining to sets.

1. Uppercase letters will be used to name sets and

lowercase letters will be used to refer to any
element of a set.

For example, let H be the set of all objects on

page 1 that cover or protect the head. We write H
= {ladies hat, baseball cap, hard hat}

This is the listing or roster method of naming the

elements of a set.

Another way of writing the elements of a set is

with the use of a descriptor. This is the rule
method.

For example, H = {x| x covers and protects the

head}. This is read as “the set H contains the
element x such that x covers and protects the
head.”

2. The symbol ∅ or { } will be used to refer to an

empty set.

3. If F is a subset of A, then we write F ⊆ A. We also

say that A contains the set F and write it as A ⊇ F.
If F is a proper subset of A, then we write F ⊂ A.

4. The cardinality of a set A is written as n(A).

D. Application Work with Partner!

Do the following exercises. Read it carefully and supply

the needed answers. Write your answers in a clean
sheet of paper.
1. write a well-defined set using the elements above,
use listing and rule method;
2. list all the possible subset; and
3. list all the proper subset.

E. Assessment You Can Do It!

Choose the correct answer to the following question

below. Write your answer in a ¼ sheet of paper.

1. Which of the following is the universal set for other

three sets?

a. set of even numbers

b. set of odd numbers

c. set of whole numbers

d. set of natural numbers

2. If U = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13}, then which of the

following is not a subset of U?

a. B = {1, 9, 5,13}

b. C = {13, 11}

c. E = {3, 5, 9}

d. F = { 1, 2}

3. Which of the following is true?

a. Integers ⊆ natural numbers

b. {a} ∈ {d, f, a, e}
c. Quadrilateral ⊆ polygon
d. ∅ ∈ {1, 2, 3, 4}

4. Which of the following is a well-defined set?

a. A set of your classmates

b. A set of kind persons in your blocks

c. A set of great singer

d. A set of shoes
5. Which of the following is not an element of a set of
natural numbers?

a. 0

b. 1

c. 3

d. 5

F. Assignment Write at least three well-defined sets you can see at

your home. List all possible subset and proper subset of
every set that you can find.
