IV. PROCEDURES

Ask:

1. What do you see class here? - a bar graph

2. What kind of bar graph is it? - Single Horizontal Bar
Graph

Study the graph and answer the questions that follow.

A. Reviewing previous
lesson of presenting the
new lesson.

1. What is the title of the horizontal bar graph?- Books Borrowed

in August
2. What is found on the horizontal axis? - Number of Pupils
On the vertical axis? - Subjects
4. What is the most borrowed book? - Math Book
5. How many more Filipino books were borrowed that AP books?
– 10

B. Establishing a * The teacher will ask the favorite animal/pet of the pupils and ask
purpose for the lesson them how did they take good care of it.
*The teacher will post the graph on the board.

Ask: What can you see in the graph? - Our Favorite Animals

Say:
1. Class, I have here four sets of the color of paper. Each set of
colors represents your favorite animal that you like.

(Show each color and tell the animal that it represents. Let the
pupils spell the words.)

Key: Dark Color : Boys Light Color: Girls

2. The dark colors are for boys and the light colors are for girls. I
want you to pick the color of the paper that represents your
favorite animal and stick it on the graph on the board.
3. Boys will stick the paper on the table with a shade of blue and
the girls will stick the paper on the part without the shade of
blue.

Ask: What do we form after sticking the colored paper on the

table?
- A bar graph.

*Excellent!

C. Presenting Say: We call this graph a Double Horizontal Bar Graph.

examples/instances of
the lesson *First, what is a bar graph? May you read what is a bar graph.

Bar graph - a chart or a graphical representation of data,

quantities or numbers using bars or strips. It is used to compare
data from a group or different groups, or different people or
animals,etc.

*As you can see I collected data from you. (Class may read the
meaning of data in chorus.)

Data – collection or gathered information

*Class what information did I gather from you? – our favorite

animal
* That’s correct! That is the information that I collected from you
and we call it, data.

*Now, let’s find out your favorite animal.

*Bar graph has two axes. The horizontal axis and the vertical axis.

VERTICAL
AXIS
HORIZONTAL AXIS

Now let’s count:

Ask: How many of you love dogs? Cat? Rabbit? Chicken?

– one, two, three…

*Very good, kids!

 Therefore, ____ of you love dogs. (same goes with cats,

rabbits, and chickens) – the number will depend on the
students answers.
Ask:
 What do you think is the title of the bar graph?
- Our Favorite Animals

Say:

Like what I said earlier, this graph is what we call “Double

Horizontal Bar Graph.

Double bar graphs help us to compare or present more than one

kind of information instead of just one by using bars. Double bar
graphs can be vertical or horizontal.

Ask:
* What information is placed along the horizontal axis?
– number of students
* Along the vertical axis? – the name of animals
* What are being compared? – The number of favorite animals of
boys and girls in our class.
* What animal is the most favorite of the students?
D. Discussing new * How many students like cats?
concepts and practicing * How many more boys than girls like dogs?
new skills #1
Great job, kids!

Look at this example. This graph is what we call, Vertical Double

Bar Graph.

E. Developing mastery Say: Let us study the graph.

Ask:
 Who can go to the board and point the vertical axis of this
graph? Horizontal axis?
 What kind of graph is it? Is it a double horizontal bar graph
or a double vertical bar graph? - double vertical bar graph
 What is the title of the double vertical bar graph? –
Favorite Clothing of Youths and Adults
 What information is found in the vertical axis? – Number of
youths and adults
 How about on a horizontal axis?-clothing
 How many youths and adults chose casual clothing? -90
 How many more youths than adults prefer sports clothing?
(Leads to Formative -30
Assessment 3)

Key: Light bar – Youth; Dark Bar- Adult

F. Finding practical * Alright, you will have a group activity. I will divide you into three
applications of concepts groups. Each group will be given a task to do at a certain time.
and skills in daily living After the given time, a representative from each group will show
and report their work.

Yellow Group

Directions: Use the bar graph to answer the following questions

below:
1. What is the title of the double horizontal bar graph?
2. What information is found in the horizontal axis?
3. How many pupils chose a Math book?
4. How many more Math books than English books were
borrowed?
5. How many Math books were borrowed in 2013? 2014?
6. How many more books were borrowed in 2014 than in 2013?

Blue Group

Directions: I will give you two pieces of colored paper, one

is dark and one is light. Make a graph using the following
data. It is up to you what kind of double bar graph you will
use, whether it is a double horizontal bar graph or a double
vertical bar graph.

Data:
A. Title: Favorite Flowers of Boys and Girls
B. Flowers:
Gumamela : Boys – 10; Girls – 20
Rose : Boys- 15, Girls – 15
Sunflower : Boys – 20; Girls 25
C. Key: Dark Color – boys; Light Color-girls

Green Group

Directions: Label the parts of the graph and answer the

questions that follow.

Questions:

1. What is the title of the graph?

2. What information is placed along the horizontal axis?
Along the vertical axis?
3. What are being compared?
4. What school material is the most used by the students?
5. How many students like paper?
6. How many more boys than girls like ballpen?

*Before you start answering, what should you remember when

doing the activity? – work quietly, focus on your work, raise your
hand when you are done, wait silently for others to finish if you
have questions, ask the teacher, not the classmate, etc…

Very good! Moreover, please remember to work as a team, and

team means:

*Teacher post and explain the “TEAM” standards in doing the

activity

You may start answering.

Ask:
 How do you interpret the data in a double vertical bar
graph and a double horizontal bar graph?
To interpret the double vertical and horizontal bar
graphs;
 Look into its parts
 Find the vertical axis and horizontal axis
G. Making  Look into the labels and the scales
 Look for the legend
generalizations and
abstractions about the  How many bars are there in a double vertical bar graph
lesson and a double horizontal bar graph? - A double bar graph
includes 2 axes with labels, title, and scale.
 What is being compared in a double vertical/horizontal bar
graph? - It compared more than one kind of information
instead of just one by using bars.
 What is the importance of a bar graph? – It is the best
effective visual to use in presentations and reports and
also to compare things between different groups.

H. Evaluating Learning
Directions: Use the double horizontal bar graph to answer the
questions below. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

b. Because it is the best use to compare data of two
things or groups.
c. Because a bar graph is used present the same data of
things or groups.
d. It is not important and not used in our daily lives.

V. ASSIGNMENT Make a double horizontal bar graph or double vertical bar

graph of the different vehicles found in our community.
