The Benefits of Intensive

“high dosage”
Therapy Over the Summer
S
ummer break is the perfect time for
children to improve upon skills that
they need to be active, and independent
learners. If your child participates in
school-based therapies as part of an IEP,
you may be considering adding additional
outpatient therapies during the summer months.
Rehabilitation experts recommend that one
of the best ways to accomplish this while still
leaving time for family summer vacation and
play time is through intensive “high dosage”
therapies.

Intensive “high dosage” therapy includes:

Daily sessions (4-5 days/week) for 2-3 weeks
One on one session or small groups sessions

There are many reasons to consider intensive

therapy for speech, occupational, or physical
therapy for your child over summer break, with
goal directed activities. In addition to there
being a ton of research supporting that it may
have better results than group or once a week
therapy interventions, there are additional
benefits of the intensive therapy approach.
Summer intensives help maintain and improve
skills needed for school in a fun and active
way. During the 3 month summer break, it
is essential that your child does not lose their
fine motor, problem-solving, planning, and
organizational skills that are necessary to be
efficient and successful students at school. The
best way to prevent any loss of skills over the
summer months is to be proactive by continuing
to practice these skills
An intensive program provides routine and
structure to their day. Summer is a time where
kids have unstructured playtime that can lead
to sedentary activities that include watching TV
and playing video games. Though unstructured
play can spark imagination and self-exploration,
including therapy in an intensive summer
program for 2 to 3 weeks carves out focused time
to work on essential tasks while leaving time to
also have fun.
Kids learn through play and repetition, which
are the backbone of high dosage therapy.

SUMMER CAMP 2023 SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 2023 | 3

To learn new skills, children have to practice

tasks over and over until they learn muscle
memory. However, repetition can become
boring. Intensive therapy adds a creative and fun
twist on repetitive learning by disguising these
tasks into play.
Intensive participation at a busy therapy center
encourages social engagement with opportunities
to interact with peers outside of school. It will
provide opportunities for your child to make
friends while teaching them to engage in social
situations during play.
Working with their therapist in a intensive
manner will improve your child’s gross motor
and coordination by practicing physical activities
every day that include biking, climbing, running,
and jumping. Your child will be more actively
engaged in goal directed activities, increasing
their potential for success in the following school
year.
These are just a few benefits that intensive
therapy can provide to your child over summer
break. EA Therapeutic Health offers pediatric
therapy and intensive programming for school
age children. For more information, visit

The Power of going to Camp

A
s adults, we often struggle to navigate
the flow of information that comes at
us every day. Imagine what it’s like for
a 14 year old trying to decide who is
telling them right from wrong or which group I
fit in with or whether I should even listen to my
parents. When advertisers want to market to 14 –
16-year-olds, they promote to 11 – 12-year-olds.
Kids want to be older, and advertisers know that.
Now imagine being 7 years old with easy access
to a smartphone. The pressure to figure it all out
is simply overwhelming. No wonder anxiety and
depression are reported by teenagers as a major
issue today, and that suicide is the second-leading
cause of death among teenagers in the U.S.

That’s why a quality summer youth camp

experience can be one of the most helpful and life
changing events in a young person’s life.
Today more than ever, our children need a
place where they can just be themselves, escape
technology, build real and lasting relationships, and
make new friends.

CAMP POWER
From Page 7
A good summer camp will not let campers bring
phones to camp. They work hard to provide solid
counselors who are trained to keep campers safe
and to be good listeners and caring. Youth culture
today is loud. When a kid is unplugged from all
the noise, they hear each other for the first time
and the walls come crashing down. They learn
real trust. They reveal themselves to others and
become stronger for sharing their true feelings with
someone who cares. That’s why at the end of the
session, kids don’t want to leave camp.

When a camper gets away from home and

puts into practice the life skills they are hearing
at home, they are transformed. They realize that
they can do it on their own. They grow in self-
confidence and self-esteem. Most of all, they gain
life skills that help them navigate the volumes of
information coming at them every minute. I have
been a camp director for 39 years and seen the
power of camp. I work with thousands of youth
every summer and have seen time and again the
life changing effect of a solid Christian camp.

participate in the time-honored tradition of camp. And, while most people easily conjure up images of campfires and canoes, there is a lot more to the
camp experience. Here are ten of the things you may not have known about the camp experience.
